Jharkhand’s High-Security Prison Easily Breached

Published

on

A shocking prison escape at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, one of Jharkhand’s most secure facilities, has sent ripples of concern throughout the state, prompting urgent inquiries into security flaws and administrative oversight.

CCTV footage captured Samir Tirkey, a life-term inmate, making his way toward the main gate on Friday morning. Over 24 hours later, authorities are still in the dark regarding his current location.

This audacious escape has sparked a large-scale manhunt, with officials desperately trying to understand how such a high-security prison was breached so easily.

Birsa Munda Central Jail employs a three-tier security system, with over 400 staff on duty, watchtowers surveilling the area, and stringent entry and exit protocols. Yet, Tirkey’s escape raises alarming questions about the facility’s vigilance.

Reports indicate that Tirkey, who was tasked with maintaining the jail’s park and overseeing locks in Ward No. 12, concocted a clever ruse on Thursday night. Claiming he needed to wash his hands and feet, he made his way to a water outlet adjacent to the prison walls.

In a bold maneuver, he used an electric cable to scale the 22-foot boundary wall and slipped into the night.

By 5:30 AM on Friday, during the standard headcount, prison officials realized Tirkey was missing. A frantic internal search began, but to no avail. Acting Jailor Devnath Ram quickly filed an FIR at the Khelgaon police station, triggering an extensive manhunt.

Tirkey, also known as Shakir Tirkey, is from Brinda Bhandara Toli in Gumla district. Convicted for abduction and murder in 2013, he was sentenced to life in prison on January 31, 2022, along with a fine of ₹70,000. Originally housed at Gumla Jail, he was transferred to Hotwar Jail in 2018.

Despite Hotwar Jail’s advanced security measures, Tirkey’s escape highlights several serious breaches. How could he have scaled a 22-foot wall without being noticed? Why did the guards in the watchtower fail to respond? Given the extensive CCTV surveillance, why weren’t his movements detected in real time? These lingering questions have placed the prison administration under severe scrutiny.

Jharkhand’s Jail IG, Sudarshan Mandal, has confirmed that an investigation is underway. “Those accountable for security failures will face strict consequences,” he stated.

As search operations ramp up at bus stations, railway terminals, and potential hideouts in Gumla, police are under intense pressure to locate and apprehend Tirkey before he vanishes completely.
