JDU Labels Rahul Gandhi’s Admiration for Dalit Icons as a Political Strategy

Published

on

The Janata Dal United (JDU), the ruling party in Bihar, has criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent visits to the state, labeling them as a political ploy designed to draw in Dalit and backward communities ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Gandhi was in Patna on January 18 to participate in the Save Constitution Conclave, and he returned on February 5 to honor the birth anniversary of Jaglal Chaudhary.

Dr. Ashok Choudhary, JDU’s National General Secretary, expressed to reporters in Patna on Friday that Gandhi’s interest in Dalit figures like Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Jaglal Chaudhary appears to be transient, driven more by circumstance than a genuine ideological commitment.

While recognizing that Jaglal Chaudhary was a significant figure within the Congress party, Choudhary pointed out that the Congress had previously overlooked his contributions. Despite ruling for many years and being a coalition partner, the party did not honor his legacy—Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was the one who had his statue erected. “The Congress is suddenly remembering Jaglal Chaudhary and Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar now because elections are approaching. However, the people are not naïve; they see through these actions,” he remarked.

Addressing Gandhi’s repeated calls for a nationwide caste census, Choudhary noted that it was Nitish Kumar who initiated the census in Bihar first. When Kumar proposed extending the survey to the entire country, Mamata Banerjee opposed the idea, and the Congress remained silent on this issue.

Recently, Rahul Gandhi has addressed the Congress party’s failure to uphold the trust of Dalits and backward communities. In efforts to rectify past oversights, the party has been prioritizing outreach to Dalits, tribals, and backward classes, who constitute 73% of the population. The Congress has also welcomed several notable politicians and social workers from Bihar who represent Dalits, minorities, and backward communities.
