Jayawardene: Bumrah’s Absence Poses a Challenge at the Start of IPL 2025
Recovering from a back injury, India’s leading fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, will miss the early part of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, presenting a challenge for the Mumbai Indians, as acknowledged by head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Wednesday. However, he sees this as an opportunity for other players to rise to the occasion as the five-time champions prepare to start their campaign without their regular captain, Hardik Pandya.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Jayawardene noted that Bumrah is currently in “good spirits” as he continues his recovery at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru (formerly the National Cricket Academy).
—
“Bumrah has just begun his recovery process. We have to await updates from the BCCI medical team, but so far, everything appears positive. It’s a day-to-day situation. Not having him poses a challenge since he’s one of the finest bowlers globally and has been an integral part of our team for many years,” said Jayawardene.
—
“We’ll have to wait or find an opportunity for someone else to excel. I see it as a chance to experiment and gauge how things unfold early in the season,” he added.
Since joining the franchise in 2013, Bumrah has transformed from a rookie bowler to one of the most feared pacers in the world, taking 165 wickets in 133 matches. However, a stress-related back injury during the second innings of the Sydney Test against Australia earlier this January has sidelined him, putting his participation in IPL 2025 at risk for at least the initial part of the season.
Following the announcement of the Champions Trophy squad in January, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that Bumrah had been instructed by the BCCI medical team to take a break for at least five weeks. While he was initially included in India’s provisional squad, his ongoing discomfort resulted in him being omitted from the final selection after undergoing scans in Bengaluru.
In Bumrah’s absence, the Mumbai Indians have a wealth of experienced fast bowlers, including Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Reece Topley, and Corbin Bosch (who is replacing Lizaad Williams), as well as the captain Pandya and uncapped players Ashwani Kumar, Satyanarayana Raju, Arjun Tendulkar, and Raj Angad Bawa.
Nevertheless, Pandya will also miss the team’s opening match due to a one-match suspension he received for slow over-rate violations during MI’s last game of IPL 2024, which leaves the franchise needing a revised strategy.

With Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed captain for MI’s opening match against Chennai Super Kings. The Mumbai Indians will commence their campaign with two away games, starting with Chennai on March 23, followed by a match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 29. Their first home game is scheduled for March 31 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Pandya received a one-match suspension and a fine of Rs 30 lakh for MI’s slow over-rate during their final IPL 2024 game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), leading MI to finish last that season with only four wins out of 14 matches.
“We have been officially informed that Hardik must sit out the first game,” Jayawardene confirmed on Wednesday, announcing Suryakumar as captain for IPL’s El Classico against CSK.
Commenting on the suspension, Pandya expressed that it was regrettable and beyond his control. “That’s not something I could manage. Last year’s situation was part of the game. We bowled the last over a minute and a half late. I was unaware of the consequences at the time. It’s unfortunate, but the rules are the rules. I’ll have to accept the decision. Whether these rules continue is up to the higher authorities,” he said, expressing confidence in Suryakumar’s leadership.
“Surya leads India in T20Is, so he is the best choice in my absence,” he added.
Pandya is expected to return as captain for MI’s second match in Ahmedabad.
