Jay Shah, Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has congratulated the Netherlands and Italy for qualifying for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Italy made history with their first-ever entry into the T20 World Cup, despite losing to the Netherlands by nine wickets in the Europe Qualifier final at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Jay Shah remarked, “An incredible achievement for @KNCBcricket and @FedCricket, qualifying for the @ICC Men’s @T20WorldCup 2026 through the Europe Qualifier. For Italy, it will be their inaugural appearance at the tournament next year. Congratulations to both teams!”

This marks the first time the Italian men’s team has qualified for an ICC senior world event, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing history. They achieved this success during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025, impressing with their performances against well-established teams.

Italy clinched decisive victories over Guernsey and achieved a remarkable upset against Scotland, one of Europe’s top associate teams. With these wins, Italy became the 13th team to qualify for the 2026 tournament.

Although Jersey stunned Scotland with a surprise victory earlier in the day, Italy’s superior net run rate was crucial. Ranking 32nd globally, Italy ended up on five points, equal with Jersey but secured their place through net run rate.

The Netherlands also quickly followed suit to qualify, leaving six spots remaining. These will be determined in upcoming regional qualifiers, with two slots for teams from Africa, one from the Americas, and three from the Asia/East Asia-Pacific region.

The 2026 T20 World Cup will be the largest yet, featuring 20 teams and showcasing the best from both full members and emerging associate nations.

Automatic entries have been granted to hosts India and Sri Lanka, along with Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, the West Indies, and the United States based on their Super Eight stage performance in the previous edition.

Mumbai: Former Chennai Super Kings player Suresh Raina has opposed the Impact Player rule in the IPL.

Raina said the rule gives batters an extra advantage and puts more pressure on bowlers. He noted that teams are now scoring 200-plus runs more frequently, with some even approaching the 300-run mark.

“Bowlers have nothing left,” Raina said, adding that the rule has made their job much harder.

Former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma and several other players have also criticised the rule.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to replace one player during a match with a batter or bowler, depending on the situation. The rule was first tested in the 2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before being introduced in the IPL in 2023.
