External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the January 20 inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the January 20 inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, marking Trump’s return as the 47th President of the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the visit, stating Jaishankar will also hold discussions with key members of the incoming administration and other dignitaries.

India anticipates challenges on trade and immigration under Trump’s second term. While Trump previously criticized Indian tariffs, he has supported the H-1B visa program, which is vital for skilled Indian professionals in the US. The program recently faced criticism from far-right groups but has been defended by figures like Elon Musk, who pledged support for foreign talent.

Jaishankar’s visit comes amid growing US-India cooperation against China’s assertiveness, with Delhi expecting continued strategic alignment through initiatives like the Quad and critical technology partnerships.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may meet Trump at an AI summit in France in February, offering an early opportunity for direct engagement. Both sides aim to build on bipartisan support for Indo-US relations as they navigate shared challenges and opportunities in Trump’s second term.
