Jailed Kannada Actress Smuggled Gold by Taping Bars to Her Thighs with Crepe Bandage

The recent arrest of Kannada film actress Ranya Rao, daughter of a senior IPS officer in Karnataka, has unveiled a significant gold smuggling operation in India. Investigations by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) discovered that the 31-year-old actress employed a unique tactic to bypass security checks—she attached 14 gold bars to her thighs using adhesive, wrapped them in tape, and concealed them beneath a crepe bandage. Officials have classified her arrest as one of the largest breakthroughs in recent gold smuggling incidents.

To date, authorities have confiscated 17.29 kg of gold and cash related to this case. This includes 14.8 kg of gold valued at ₹12.56 crore seized at the airport, an additional ₹2.06 crore worth of gold recovered from her Bengaluru residence, and ₹2.67 crore in cash.

Ranya Rao was apprehended on Monday night upon her return to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Acting on prior intelligence, the DRI had stationed a four-member team at the airport in anticipation of her arrival. Sources indicate that she had undertaken four trips to Dubai within just 15 days, prompting suspicions among investigators who believe she may have been involved in multiple gold smuggling operations.

Authorities claim that Rao took advantage of her father’s role as Director General of Police (Police Housing Corporation) to evade scrutiny at the airport. Upon landing, she would allegedly call police personnel for assistance, who would escort her home.

Investigators are now looking into the possibility of complicity among police officers within the smuggling network. Following her arrest, the DRI conducted a raid on her upscale Lavelle Road apartment in Bengaluru on Wednesday, where she paid a rent of ₹4.5 lakh. This search yielded additional gold and cash, bringing the total seizure to 17.29 kg of gold and ₹2.67 crore in cash.

Ranya’s father, Ramachandra Rao, has distanced himself from the matter, stating that they have not been in contact since her marriage four months ago. Ranya Rao is recognized for her performance alongside Kannada superstar Sudeep in ‘Maanikya’ and has also appeared in various South Indian films.
