ISL 2024-25: Shami Singamayum Sets Record as the League’s Youngest Scorer in Punjab FC Victory

Shami Singamayum made history by becoming the youngest goal-scorer in the league’s history as Punjab FC triumphed over Hyderabad FC with a score of 3-1 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Thursday night.

In a record-breaking match, Shami, at just 17 years and 322 days old, set the record for the youngest-ever goal-scorer in ISL history. Additionally, Muhammad Suhail became the third-youngest player to assist a goal in the tournament at 18 years and 175 days.

Despite controlling only 43.7% of possession, Punjab FC displayed more offensive intent, managing seven shots on target compared to just two from Hyderabad FC. Although they are out of playoff contention, this victory brought Punjab FC’s points total to 27, while also ending Hyderabad FC’s home unbeaten streak, which had lasted five matches. Asmir Suljic was particularly impactful in the attacking phase, driving creativity in the Hyderabad FC half with his agility and passing vision, posing constant threats to the home defenses.

A notable chance came in the 22nd minute when Luka Majcen connected with Suljic’s well-placed pass in the box, striking low towards the bottom left corner, but the shot was saved. This followed a similar play just 12 minutes earlier, where Majcen had assisted Suljic, whose attempt to score was weak and easily handled.

Punjab FC broke the deadlock in the 41st minute due to an own goal from Alex Saji. Muhammad Suhail took a shot from distance following a pass from Ricky Shabong. Though it didn’t find the net, sustained pressure led to a defensive mishap for Hyderabad FC, resulting in Saji failing to make a routine clearance, inadvertently putting the ball into his own net before half-time.

Majcen focused primarily on being an attacking target inside the box, allowing Suhail to take more playmaking duties. In the 56th minute, Suhail fed Majcen with an expertly placed pass, which the striker confidently converted into the bottom left corner, extending their lead. In response, Hyderabad FC ramped up their attack, but their aggressive strategy left gaps in their defense.

Punjab FC capitalized on this vulnerability in the 86th minute when Petros Giakoumakis orchestrated a counter-attack, setting up Shami Singamayum outside the box. Shami skillfully placed his shot into the center of the net with his left foot. Though Hyderabad FC managed to score late in the second half, with Ramhlunchhunga delivering a powerful shot into the bottom right corner after receiving a pass from Cy Goddard, they ran out of time to equalize, conceding the match to Punjab FC.
