IPL 2025: Dhoni Describes Bhojpuri Commentary as Energetic and Nostalgic of Classic Radio Broadcasts
Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni has shown his support for the introduction of regional language commentary in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He particularly expressed his admiration for Bhojpuri commentary, describing it as “energetic” and reminiscent of traditional radio broadcasts.
Bhojpuri commentary made its first appearance during IPL 2023 and quickly captivated fans. The current 18th season of the IPL is being streamed live across 16 feeds, showcasing 12 different languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Haryanvi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Punjabi on the digital streaming platform.

“I haven’t had much exposure to regional language commentary, as most of my live match views are accompanied by limited replays, and I primarily hear commentary in English or Hindi, which aids in game analysis. Personally, I enjoy listening to commentators, as many of them have been former players. Despite playing in 17 games a season, they have experience covering countless matches across various tournaments and countries, giving them a broad understanding of different situations and teams,” Dhoni noted.
—
“As players, we understand our team’s strengths and weaknesses, but commentary provides an outside perspective that can inspire new ideas—prompting considerations like ‘why not try this method?’—which can then be analyzed through intelligence and data to align with the team’s strategy.
“While I haven’t experienced a lot of regional commentary, I am aware that Bhojpuri commentary is quite dynamic. It brings back memories of classic radio commentary, where presenters were deeply engaged. I find that very appealing. Many fans prefer to tune in their regional language—it’s their mother tongue, enhancing their enjoyment of the game. I would be keen to hear Haryanvi commentary because it offers a distinct flavor,” Dhoni shared on JisHotstar’s ‘The MS Dhoni Experience’.
As of 2025, Dhoni is participating in his 18th season of the tournament, having played 265 matches and accumulated 5,243 runs, including 24 half-centuries.
