In a formidable display of support for women’s empowerment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked International Women’s Day by entrusting his social media accounts to six remarkable women, as announced by the Prime Minister’s Office. This innovative initiative provides a platform for these inspiring women to narrate their extraordinary stories, achievements, and challenges to the nation.

These women represent diverse regions of India, including Vaishali Rameshbabu from Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Anjlee Agarwal from Delhi, Anita Devi from Nalanda in Bihar, Elina Mishra from Bhubaneswar in Odisha, Ajaita Shah from Rajasthan, and Shilpi Soni from Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.

While four women shared their experiences individually, Elina and Shilpi collaborated to tell their inspiring tales together. Their fields span sports, rural entrepreneurship, science, technology, and beyond.

Vaishali Rameshbabu is a chess prodigy who has been competing at the highest levels since she was six years old. She achieved the title of Chess Grandmaster in 2023 and continues to represent India on the world stage with her strategic prowess and dedication. In a message from PM Modi’s account, Vaishali expressed her excitement: “I am @chess Vaishali, thrilled to take over the PM’s social media on Women’s Day. Since I was six, I have been playing chess, reflecting on my journey that has been both thrilling and rewarding. There is so much more to share.”

Anita Devi, known as the “Mushroom Lady of Bihar,” broke through the barriers of poverty to establish the Madhopur Farmers Producers Company in 2016, promoting self-sufficiency through mushroom cultivation. This initiative not only empowered her but also created job opportunities for countless rural women, fostering financial independence. Anita remarked in a post: “I am Anita Devi from Anantapur village in Nalanda district. I faced many struggles but aspired to be self-employed. My company now provides jobs and essential resources to farmers, helping hundreds of women achieve self-reliance.”

Elina Mishra and Shilpi Soni are distinguished scientists making waves in their respective fields. Elina works as a nuclear scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, while Shilpi contributes to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). They stated, “We are Elina and Shilpi, and we are excited to lead the PM’s social media on #WomensDay. India is a vibrant hub for science, and we encourage more women to join these fields.”

Ajaita Shah, Founder & CEO of Frontier Markets, is championing rural entrepreneurship by empowering over 35,000 digitally-enabled women entrepreneurs. Her efforts are bridging the gap between rural markets and essential goods. Ajaita highlighted, “A financially empowered woman is an architect of her future. I have dedicated the last two decades to overcoming challenges faced by rural women, and I am proud of the impact we’re creating.”

Dr. Anjlee Agarwal, a pioneer in universal accessibility, established the Samarthyam Centre for Universal Accessibility. Her lifelong dedication to ensuring barrier-free infrastructure for everyone—especially those with disabilities—has greatly improved access to schools and public spaces. She shared, “I am honored to take over PM @narendramodi’s social media today. Let’s work together to strengthen Sugamya Bharat for a more inclusive society.”
