Installation of Karnataka’s First C-Band Weather Radar in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: The installation of Karnataka’s first C-Band Weather Radar (DWR) in Mangaluru is nearing completion and is expected to become operational by the end of January, despite minor delays due to technical issues, according to N Puviarasan, the head of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru. Speaking at a workshop organized by TMD Bengaluru on Saturday as part of the IMD’s 150th-anniversary celebrations, Puviarasan mentioned that the radar, initially scheduled to be operational by January 15, is now expected to begin functioning by the end of the month.
The workshop, hosted by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), featured several technical sessions in collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Agricultural Meteorology Department of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru.
During the workshop, Puviarasan also discussed the challenges faced by IMD in setting up an S-Band DWR in Bengaluru. The project has encountered land acquisition issues, as IMD requires a 30×30-meter plot for the tower and utility room.
The Mangaluru radar, being established near Kadri, will have a coverage range of 250–300 km. It is expected to provide enhanced weather forecasting for Karnataka’s heavy rainfall areas during the monsoon, including Agumbe, Hulikal, Talacauvery, Kerekatte, and Bhagamandala. Puviarasan also mentioned plans for X-Band DWRs in Dharwad, S-Band radars in Honnavar, and C-Band radars in Ballari.
Currently, Karnataka does not have any Doppler Weather Radars, relying on those located in Goa, Hyderabad, and Chennai for accurate weather forecasts.
KSNDMC Director Bhoyar Harshal Narayanrao highlighted Karnataka’s vulnerability to natural disasters during the workshop. He noted that 80% of the state is drought-prone, with 16 of the past 23 years experiencing drought conditions. He also emphasized the widespread damage caused by landslides in districts like Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, and Kodagu. The state has witnessed an increased frequency of landslides, particularly since 2018.
