India’s Got Latent: Controversial Remarks Resurface, Including ‘Kya Body Count Hai?’

The reality show “India’s Got Latent,” hosted by comedian Samay Raina, is once again embroiled in controversy. This program, which combines ‘comedy’ with talent assessments, faces allegations of promoting misogyny, ableism, queerphobia, and casteist humor. Although it presents itself as an edgy and innovative talent competition, many critics argue that it often crosses into offensive territory. The latest uproar was sparked by content creator and fashion icon Uorfi Javed, who disclosed the reasons behind her decision to leave the show. In a sequence of Instagram Stories, she voiced her discontent with the toxic atmosphere on set. “I think I missed the memo—apparently, it’s now ‘cool’ to abuse someone or shame them for views,” she stated. Uorfi recounted experiences of personal attacks and assumptions about her private life, as well as being verbally assaulted on stage after challenging a contestant pretending to have a disability.

This is not the first time the show has faced backlash. In a different episode, a panel of guest comedians casually inquired about a contestant’s “body count,” leading to widespread outrage. Viewers condemned the segment as inappropriate and degrading.

Despite ongoing criticism, “India’s Got Latent” remains popular, attracting millions of viewers. Raina’s YouTube channel has amassed over 7.4 million subscribers, indicating a loyal audience. While the show’s unapologetic style has garnered a following, it also raises concerns about the impact of humor in mainstream Indian entertainment, particularly as it often targets marginalized communities.

A particularly troubling incident involved comedian Santosh Patra, who made offensive jokes about individuals with disabilities. Instead of confronting him, the panel praised his so-called ‘comedy,’ raising questions about the ethical responsibilities of influential content creators.
