India to Repatriate 18,000 Illegal Migrants from the US Under Trump Administration’s Crackdown

Published

on

The US has identified some 18,000 illegal Indian migrants which are to be sent back, and for this India would verify and start the deportation process

New Delhi is set to cooperate with the United States in identifying and repatriating approximately 18,000 Indian nationals residing illegally in the country, according to a Bloomberg report. The move comes as part of the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to curb illegal immigration, which President Donald Trump declared a “national emergency” during his inauguration earlier this week.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has flagged these individuals for deportation, and India has agreed to verify and facilitate their repatriation process. President Trump has vowed to immediately halt illegal entry into the United States, announcing plans to return millions of “criminal aliens” to their countries of origin.

Immigration Report Card

The issue of illegal migration has been a focal point in US-India relations, with data shedding light on the extent of the challenge:

  • In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the DHS deported over 1,100 Indian nationals. Globally, 495 repatriation flights facilitated the removal of 160,000 individuals to 145 countries, including India.
  • Illegal migration to the US has surged, particularly through the northern border. While Indians accounted for just 3% of unlawful crossings in 2024, they have surpassed the Philippines to become the largest group of Asian illegal migrants since 2022.
  • US authorities encountered 90,415 Indians attempting to enter illegally in 2023-24. DHS estimates there are about 220,000 unauthorized Indian immigrants in the US as of 2022, contributing to the nationwide undocumented population of 13.3 million.

Economic and Policy Implications

The Trump administration’s immigration strategy could require substantial investments. According to the American Immigration Council (AIC), implementing mass deportations would necessitate expanding the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) workforce from 20,000 to between 220,000 and 409,000 staff, costing an estimated $315 billion to $1 trillion. Such measures could also shrink the US GDP by 4.2% to 6.8%.

Despite this, undocumented immigrants, including Indians, play a significant role in the US economy. Over two-thirds of this population have lived in the US for more than a decade, contributing approximately 5% to the workforce, particularly in agriculture, hospitality, construction, and healthcare.

India’s Stance on Legal Migration

India is committed to preserving legal immigration channels while addressing unauthorized migration. Indian nationals accounted for nearly 75% of the 386,000 H-1B visas granted in 2023, underscoring their significance in the skilled workforce.

As the US moves forward with its immigration crackdown, India’s cooperation highlights a complex balancing act: addressing illegal migration while advocating for the rights of its diaspora and fostering stronger bilateral ties.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that American forces, along with Nigerian armed forces, have killed senior ISIS leader Abu Bilal al-Minuki in a joint military operation.

Trump shared the information through a post on Truth Social on Thursday night according to US time. He said the operation was carried out under his direction and described Abu Bilal as one of the world’s most active terrorists.

According to Trump, Abu Bilal believed he could hide in Africa and continue his activities without being tracked. However, Trump said US intelligence agencies had complete information about his movements and plans.

“He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa or help plan attacks targeting Americans,” Trump stated in his post. He also added that the terrorist leader can no longer spread fear among innocent people.

Abu Bilal al-Minuki had strong links with the Islamic State network operating in parts of West Africa. The United States had placed sanctions on him in 2023 for his alleged role in supporting extremist activities in the region.
