India is preparing to dispatch over 15 tonnes of relief supplies to Myanmar following a devastating series of earthquakes that have resulted in the loss of more than 144 lives and injured over 700, according to sources. The relief materials will be transported to Myanmar via an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J aircraft from Air Force Station Hindon.

The assistance package includes a range of essential items such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets, and vital medications including paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages.

The Indian Embassy is closely monitoring the developments and has confirmed that there have been no reports of injuries to Indian nationals thus far.
“Following the strong earthquake tremors felt in Bangkok and various parts of Thailand, our Embassy is in continuous coordination with Thai authorities. No incidents involving Indian citizens have been reported to date. In case of emergencies, Indian nationals in Thailand are encouraged to reach out using the emergency number +66 618819218. All Embassy staff in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are reported safe,” the Embassy stated in a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed India’s readiness to provide assistance to Myanmar in light of the recent massive earthquake.
“I am deeply concerned about the situation in Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X. “India stands prepared to offer all possible support.”

Authorities in neighboring countries, including India and Bangladesh, reported minimal impact from the 7.7-magnitude quake that struck Myanmar.
The tremors, including a significant 7.2-magnitude earthquake, caused structural damage and widespread panic both in Myanmar and in nearby Thailand.

An aftershock measuring 4.2 on the Richter Scale shook Myanmar at 11:56 p.m. local time, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, raising concerns about potential aftershocks. The NCS recorded this earthquake at Latitude 22.15 N and Longitude 95.41 E.

The NCS noted in a post on X, “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 28/03/2025 23:56:29 IST, Lat: 22.15 N, Long: 95.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar.”

Earlier on the same day, Myanmar was rocked by several tremors, including a significant 7.2-magnitude quake at 11:50 a.m. local time. This powerful tremor was felt in Bangkok, with reports indicating that hundreds fled swaying buildings. Eyewitness accounts and social media posts depicted water splashing from pools as a result of the quake’s intensity.

According to the NCS, the 7.2-magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of 10 km, at Latitude 21.93 N and Longitude 96.07 E. In a post, the NCS stated, “EQ of M: 7.2, On: 28/03/2025 11:50:52 IST, Lat: 21.93 N, Long: 96.07 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar.”

The earthquake, which struck around 11:50 a.m. IST, was followed just minutes later by an aftershock of 6.4 magnitude. The NCS later reported a third aftershock measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale, following the initial 7.2 earthquake.

In addition, media reports indicated that a 30-story building under construction in the Chatuchak district collapsed as a result of the quake. Videos obtained by CNN depicted a road bridge spanning the Irrawaddy River in Mandalay crumbling into the water amidst a cloud of dust.

Myanmar experienced six earthquakes on that Friday, according to a statement from the National Center for Seismology. Despite being located in a seismically active region due to the convergence of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates, Myanmar lacks an official national seismic hazard map.

Historical data from the International Seismological Centre shows that from 1990 to 2019, Myanmar experienced nearly 140 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher annually, emphasizing the country’s vulnerability to both moderate and significant earthquakes, as well as the potential for tsunami hazards along its long coastline.
