Political: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s strong support for Israel in the global fight against terrorism during his address to the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem.

Calling the October 7 attack by Hamas a “brutal and inhuman act of terror,” Modi said terrorism is a threat to humanity and must be defeated through unity and cooperation. He expressed deep solidarity with the people of Israel, stating that India shares their pain and sorrow in this difficult time.

“We stand with you in this moment and in the future,” he said, delivering a strong message of partnership and friendship between the two nations.

Highlighting the deep historical ties between India and Israel, Modi recalled that over 4,000 Indian soldiers sacrificed their lives in the region during World War I. He also remembered the historic Battle of Haifa in September 1918, describing it as a proud chapter in military history.

During his 35-minute speech, members of the Knesset gave him a standing ovation and chanted his name as he arrived. In recognition of his leadership and efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, Modi was honoured with the prestigious Speaker of the Knesset Medal, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to receive the award.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the development of seven high-speed rail corridors while presenting the Union Budget 2026–27. The project aims to strengthen connectivity between major cities and promote faster, environmentally sustainable passenger transport.

The proposed corridors include Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri. These routes are expected to connect financial centres, technology hubs, manufacturing regions, and emerging urban areas across the country.

Sitharaman described the corridors as “growth connectors” that will reduce travel time, lower carbon emissions, and support balanced regional development.

The government believes the new rail network will improve inter-city travel and create economic opportunities in the regions along the routes. The initiative is part of a broader infrastructure push focused on rapidly growing cities and long-term economic expansion.
