Imtiaz Ali Dismisses ‘Jab We Met’ Sequel Speculations, Discusses Women in Film at JLF 2025

Ali made it clear that he does not support creating sequels simply for commercial purposes. While recognizing that sequels can be financially lucrative and that audiences may be intrigued, he emphasized that for him, storytelling is an adventure rooted in joy, rather than a pursuit of profit.
He noted that he would only entertain the idea of a sequel if he truly felt there was more story to tell. Dismissing the notion of revisiting ‘Jab We Met’, he argued that viewers wouldn’t enjoy seeing Geet and Aditya, the film’s beloved couple, face relationship dilemmas or conflicts.
As a filmmaker known for his emphasis on strong female characters, Ali discussed the progress in the representation of women within Indian cinema. While he acknowledged advancements, he pointed out that powerful female roles have long been present in classics such as ‘Mother India’ and ‘Andaz’.

He expressed his long-standing belief in the strength and independence of women, a viewpoint shaped by the influence of his mother. This perspective is reflected in his films, where female protagonists are often complex and self-sufficient.
Beyond his cinematic endeavors, Ali shared anecdotes from his personal life. He recounted an early childhood failure at the age of nine and how it influenced his outlook. He also touched on the simpler struggles of his youth, including living in a house without air conditioning, where open windows were more of a necessity than a comfort.
The discussion also covered his body of work, including titles such as ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, ‘Tamasha’, ‘Rockstar’, and ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’. He reflected on the importance of both success and failure, emphasizing that while success brings celebration, failure imparts invaluable lessons. His films, he stated, aim to portray truth and the human experience in its most authentic form.
