Ilaiyaraaja to Establish Girls’ Orchestra in Honor of Daughter Bhavatharini
Announcing this heartfelt tribute on February 12, Bhavatharini’s birthday, Ilaiyaraaja spoke at a commemorative event. He fondly recalled her aspiration to start an orchestra, a desire that resurfaced recently during his visit to Malaysia, where he enjoyed performances by various girl groups.
“Bhavatharini had always dreamed of starting a girls’ orchestra. Just days ago, while in Malaysia, I was inspired by the performances I witnessed, which reminded me of her dreams,” he shared.
With the determination to make her dream come true, Ilaiyaraaja revealed that the orchestra would comprise talented young girls, particularly school and college students aged under 15. He emphasized that the selection process will be rigorous, with auditions planned to identify the most skilled musicians.

This opportunity will be open to girls globally, ensuring a rich tapestry of talent. Ilaiyaraaja also mentioned that he had already identified two orchestras in Malaysia, noting that this is merely the beginning of a broader initiative.
His vision is to establish a musical ensemble that will continue to perform for years, bringing joy to audiences far and wide. “I aim for this orchestra to provide a musical feast for the masses indefinitely,” he expressed, with plans to share more details at an appropriate time.
Bhavatharini, Ilaiyaraaja’s beloved daughter, was a talented singer and National Award winner, celebrated for her soft, melodic voice. She recorded numerous hit songs in various languages and won the prestigious National Award for her song “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu…” from the Tamil film ‘Bharathi,’ composed by her father.
In addition to her singing talent, she made a significant impact as a music director and was actively working on compositions for three films at the time of her untimely passing in Sri Lanka while receiving medical treatment.
