Ibobi Singh Calls on BJP to Select a New Chief Minister for Manipur

Published

on

Okram Ibobi Singh, former Chief Minister and leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), has urged the BJP’s central leadership to appoint a new Chief Minister for Manipur, highlighting the urgent need to restore peace and stability in the violence-affected state.

During a press conference, the seasoned Congress leader criticized the delay in selecting a successor to N. Biren Singh, who recently resigned amid increasing internal strife within the ruling BJP. Ibobi stated that if the central leadership had the determination, a new Chief Minister could have been inaugurated right after Biren’s resignation was accepted by the Governor on Sunday.

“The Assembly session could have proceeded as planned on February 10 had the Centre acted in a timely manner,” he asserted. He further noted that, under the direction of the BJP’s high command, a new Chief Minister could be sworn in at any time, even at midnight, if necessary.

However, maintaining the Assembly in a state of uncertainty, even for a short duration, is undesirable and raises governance concerns within the state.

Ibobi Singh firmly opposed any attempt to impose President’s Rule in Manipur, stressing that such a move would be unacceptable to the state’s people. “If the Centre is attempting to create a constitutional crisis in Manipur to justify the imposition of President’s Rule, it would be a grave injustice to the residents,” he warned.

His statements come at a critical time as Manipur remains tense after months of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The northeastern state has faced ongoing law and order issues since May 2023, compounded by political instability within the ruling BJP.

Having served as Manipur’s Chief Minister from 2002 to 2017, Ibobi Singh emphasized that the Congress party is ready to offer constructive suggestions to the state government, but will not shy away from calling out its shortcomings.

The Congress party currently holds only five seats in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly and has been in the opposition since 2017, following the BJP forming the government with support from regional allies.
