Published

on

Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh has announced that comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections for Urban Local Bodies slated for March 2.

Singh confirmed that voting will take place on March 2 to elect Mayors and all ward members in seven Municipal Corporations: Gurugram, Manesar, Faridabad, Hisar, Rohtak, Karnal, and Yamunanagar. Additionally, by-elections for the Mayoral positions in the Ambala and Sonipat Municipal Corporations will also occur on that day.

Elections will also be held for the President and all ward members of four Municipal Councils, specifically Ambala Sadar, Pataudi Jatoli Mandi, Thanesar, and Sirsa. A bye-election for the President’s position in the Sohna Municipal Council in Gurugram district is also scheduled.

On March 2, voting will extend to the election of Presidents and ward members in 21 Municipal Committees, with bye-elections for Presidents in the Assandh (Karnal district) and Ismailabad (Kurukshetra district) Municipal Committees taking place as well.

Singh revealed that a total of 39 candidates are running for the Mayor positions across the nine Municipal Corporations. For the posts of President in five Municipal Councils, there are 27 candidates, while 151 candidates are in contention for the Presidents of 23 Municipal Committees.

In certain wards, only one candidate has filed nominations, resulting in their unopposed election. These wards include Ward No. 36 in the Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, Ward No. 22 in Gurugram, Ward Nos. 8 and 11 in Karnal, and Ward No. 9 in Yamunanagar.

Additionally, candidates have also been elected unopposed in Ward No. 24 of the Municipal Council of Ambala Sadar and Ward Nos. 7 and 32 of the Municipal Council of Thanesar. Furthermore, 17 ward members across various Municipal Committees have been elected unopposed. The elections will utilize electronic voting machines (EVMs), but a single EVM will be employed in areas where only bye-elections are occurring.

To maintain a peaceful and fair election process, Singh stated that the Excise and Taxation Department has imposed a liquor ban under Section 135C of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, from 6 PM on February 28 until the polls close on Sunday, March 2. The Election Commissioner has issued firm directives to ensure compliance.

He noted that all Deputy Commissioners have identified sensitive and hyper-sensitive polling stations, with 393 marked as sensitive and 531 as hyper-sensitive. To bolster security, an additional police officer will be stationed at each identified location, while mobile police teams will be engaged in regular patrols. General election observers and police election observers have been assigned to monitor these polling stations closely.

Moreover, Singh reported that 163 sensitive and 256 hyper-sensitive polling stations have been identified within the Gurugram Municipal Corporation. Similarly, 68 sensitive and 72 hyper-sensitive polling stations have been designated in the Rohtak Municipal Corporation, along with 42 hyper-sensitive stations in Hisar.

Singh indicated that, excluding Panipat Municipal Corporation, there are 4,605,447 voters in the remaining Municipal Corporations—comprising 2,231,987 male voters, 1,964,782 female voters, and 144 others.
