Hansal Mehta vs. Kangana Ranaut: A Battle of Words Amid the Kunal Kamra Controversy

Published

on

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta and actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut are embroiled in yet another intense exchange! This latest spat revolves around comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent controversy, bringing past events, political affiliations, and a significant amount of online drama into the spotlight.

Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra finds himself in hot water after making jokes about Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. Following his comments, Kamra’s Mumbai studio was vandalized and subsequently demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), prompting many to view this as an infringement on his freedom of speech.

Mehta, celebrated for films such as ‘Shahid’ and ‘Scam 1992,’ quickly rallied in support of Kamra, denouncing the vandalism on social media. However, this drew the ire of many online.

A social media user challenged Mehta, questioning why he hadn’t shown the same level of support when Kangana’s property was partially demolished by the BMC in 2020. Mehta replied, posing a thought-provoking counter: “Was her house vandalized as an attack on her freedom of expression, or was it due to alleged FSI violations? Did goons invade her property? Please educate me.”

“Was her house vandalised? Did goons invade her property? Was it a challenge to her freedom of expression or a matter of FSI violations? Please enlighten me. Perhaps I am unaware of the details.” https://t.co/sUQxYr6uow

Unsurprisingly, Kangana did not take this lightly. The ‘Queen’ actress fired back, branding Mehta “bitter and foolish,” and accused him of fabricating narratives about her experiences.

Resharing Mehta’s post, she recounted the distressing ordeal of her house being demolished overnight, before the courts had a chance to intervene, also alleging that she faced harassment, threats, and public shaming during that period. “It’s not about the low-quality series or terrible films you create. Don’t attempt to peddle your ridiculous lies and agendas regarding my experiences,” she retorted.

Mehta, in a succinct and sarcastic reply, simply stated: “Get well soon.”

But the drama doesn’t stop there…

Amid this Twitter confrontation, Kangana made her feelings about Kunal Kamra very explicit. In a press statement, she called his jokes “offensive” and suggested he was merely seeking “two minutes of fame.” Contrasting her own struggles with Kamra’s situation, she asserted: “What happened to me was illegal. What’s occurring now is legal action. You can’t just slander people in the name of comedy without consequences.”

She also defended Eknath Shinde, emphasizing his journey from being an auto-rickshaw driver to a political figure.

Political heavyweights also entered the fray. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticized Kamra’s remarks about Shinde, stressing that while freedom of speech exists, it has its limits, and called for an apology from the comedian.

“There is a right to perform stand-up comedy, but he cannot say anything he wishes. The people of Maharashtra know who the traitor is. Kamra should apologize,” Fadnavis asserted. He also took a jab at Kamra’s political understanding, likening him to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, suggesting he had a poor grasp of the Constitution.

This controversy extends beyond Kamra, Mehta, and Kangana—it embodies a larger debate about free speech, political authority, and artistic liberty in India.

Kamra’s ‘Naya Bharat’ comedy video, which ignited the backlash, continues to trend on YouTube. Meanwhile, opinions remain divided online—some supporters back Kamra, others side with Shinde, and a few are simply entertained by the Kangana-Mehta Twitter feud.
