Hairstylist Unveils the Transformation Behind Ranveer Singh’s Iconic ‘Padmaavat’ Look

Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of the infamous Sultan Alauddin Khilji in ‘Padmaavat’ stands out as one of his most remarkable performances. The character’s intensity and fierce demeanor were amplified by Singh’s physical transformation, which was vital in expressing Khilji’s menacing essence.
Behind this unforgettable look was the dedicated effort of hair artist Darshan, whose artistic vision and meticulous attention to detail brought the ruthless ruler to life on screen.During a dialogue with IANS, Darshan unveiled the process behind creating the iconic Khilji appearance for Ranveer Singh in ‘Padmaavat’. For him, the journey began with delving into the character’s core essence.

“Upon first hearing about Khilji, I recognized him as a Mughal king, a figure of devastation, ruthless and power-hungry. His appearance needed to reflect this,” Darshan noted. The beard was the team’s initial focus.

To perfect the beard, they allowed it to grow out over several months, investing around three months in careful grooming. “It wasn’t solely about having a beard; it was about creating a look that embodied the character’s persona,” he added.

Darshan recounted how the concept of long, flowing hair emerged. “In ‘Bajirao Mastani’, Ranveer had a dramatically different appearance, even bald. However, for Khilji, we sought something striking—long, wild hair that resembled a lion’s mane. This was a powerful man, and his hair had to mirror his ferocity,” he explained.

To achieve this effect, Darshan partnered with prosthetic artist Preeti Sheel, employing hair extensions to create Singh’s desired long locks.

The initial look test was crucial. Darshan reflected, “Our entire team was in sync, and we successfully crafted the Khilji look during that session. We maintained a trim that emphasized the sharpness of the beard, reflecting Khilji’s threatening nature while experimenting with various long hairstyles. We tried four or five styles before landing on the perfect one.”

A defining aspect of this transformation, as noted by Darshan, was the influence of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s vision. Known for his keen eye for detail, Bhansali challenges his team to push the limits of creativity.

“Sanjay sir was instrumental in shaping the variations of Khilji’s look. He continually encouraged us to think creatively, exploring different interpretations for how this powerful king should be portrayed,” Darshan explained.

One memorable moment during filming involved experimenting with Khilji’s hairstyle. At one point, the team devised a half-bun style complemented by two braids, injecting an added layer of unpredictability into the character.

“This spontaneous change was created on the spot and turned out to resonate well with the character,” said Darshan. Bhansali’s openness to explore fresh ideas led to a dynamic evolution of looks throughout the film’s production.
