Girlfriend Sentenced to Death for Poisoning Boyfriend in Kerala

Kerala: A court in Kerala has sentenced Greeshma, the girlfriend of Sharon, to the death penalty for his murder, which shocked the nation in 2022. Greeshma had confessed to poisoning Sharon’s food with a lethal substance. After reviewing the case, the Neyyattinkara Additional District and Sessions Court imposed the death penalty on Greeshma. Additionally, Greeshma’s uncle, Nirmal Kumaran Nair, who assisted her in the crime, has been sentenced to three years in prison. However, Greeshma’s mother was acquitted due to a lack of evidence.

Sharon’s mother expressed her relief after the verdict, saying that justice had finally been served for her son. Sharon, a radiology student, had died on October 14, 2022, from poisoning. Greeshma was initially arrested based on suspicions, and during police interrogation, she admitted to the crime.

Sharon and Greeshma had been in a relationship, but Greeshma had started distancing herself from him and got engaged to a soldier. Sharon could not accept this, and in a fit of jealousy, Greeshma believed that by killing him, her path would be clear. She invited Sharon to her house and mixed Paraquat, a toxic pesticide, into his food. Sharon later confessed to the hospital about the incident, but despite medical treatment, he succumbed to the poisoning.

Greeshma became the youngest woman in Kerala to be sentenced to death. During the trial, she requested a reduction in her sentence, citing her academic achievements, lack of a criminal record, and being the only daughter of her parents. However, the court denied her plea, ruling that the nature of the crime did not warrant any leniency, and delivered justice by sentencing her to death.
