FSSAI May Consider Nationwide Ban on Analogue Paneer

Published

on

New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) may consider a nationwide ban on analogue paneer, FSSAI Chief Rajit Punhani said.

Punhani said the issue will be discussed at a meeting with representatives from all states on September 24. A final decision could be taken if there is a consensus among the states.

Analogue paneer is made using ingredients such as vegetable oils, starches, emulsifiers and other additives instead of being made fully from milk.

Several states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, have already banned analogue paneer. The move is aimed at ensuring that consumers get milk-based paneer.

Punhani said compliance with food safety rules in India is gradually improving. He said state governments have increased inspections across restaurants, packaged food businesses and spice manufacturers.

More than 1 lakh notices have been issued in recent months, according to Punhani. Around 5,000 food licences have been suspended, while more than 600 people have been arrested.

He also said around 1,900 convictions have been recorded and penalties have been imposed in nearly 33,000 cases.

Punhani said food safety violations often receive more attention in the media. He added that many inspections also find that businesses are following the required safety standards.

Punhani also spoke about the proposed warning labels for packaged food products containing high levels of sugar, salt or fat.

The labels are expected to clearly warn consumers when a product has high levels of these ingredients. A red hexagon design has been discussed, but the final decision will be taken by the Supreme Court.

The implementation may take some time. FSSAI will first issue a draft notification and invite comments from stakeholders.

The proposal will also have to be placed on the World Trade Organization website because it may affect international trade. Food manufacturers will then be given time to change their packaging.

E-commerce platforms will also have to display manufacturing and expiry dates clearly on their websites. The deadline for this change is September 30.

Punhani said consumers should be careful while buying food products and choose reliable stores and local vendors.
