From Rolls-Royce to Silver Chariots: Sadhus Arrive in Style at Maha Kumbh Mela
Prayagraj, January 2025: The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, a revered religious gathering known for its deep spiritual significance, is witnessing a surprising blend of tradition and modern luxury this year. As the grand Chhavani Pravesh Yatra (Peshwai procession) unfolds, it’s not just the spiritual fervor of the procession that captures attention, but also the presence of high-end vehicles like Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi Q7, gliding through the makeshift roads of the Mela grounds.
Luxury Vehicles in the Midst of Spirituality
The procession, which traditionally features the rhythmic beats of drums and devotional chants, now also includes swanky rides and unconventional seers flaunting their “swag.” Sporting branded sunglasses, gold chains, and confident postures, these ascetics seem to be relishing the attention from the crowd. While some senior seers arrive in gold and silver chariots, others opt for luxury vehicles, with some of these premium rides available for rent at a hefty cost of Rs 51,000 per day.
These high-end vehicles are typically owned by senior religious figures such as peetadheeshwars, mahamandaleshwars, and mandaleshwars. In some cases, these vehicles are provided by their disciples or protocol teams. The vehicles, which range from Rs 59 lakh to Rs 65 lakh for top-end models, also include entry-level versions priced between Rs 15.98 lakh and Rs 33 lakh.
Swanky Rides Leading the Procession
The Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara and the Kinnar Akhara were the first to lead the procession, setting the tone for this new trend. Mahamandaleshwar Pavitranand Giri of the Juna Akhara made a grand entrance in a restored 1965 Rolls-Royce, while Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi of the Kinnar Akhara sat on a large silver throne during the Devtva Yatra.
Vintage Cars Making Waves
Ayush Tandon, who rents out vintage cars for weddings and events, revealed that his Rolls-Royce was rented out for the first time by the Kinnar Akhara for their Devtva Yatra. Vintage cars have also been booked by other akharas, including the Shri Shambhu Panch Dashnam Agni Akhara and Juna Akhara. The demand for these luxury vehicles extends to major events like the Shahi Snan on January 13 and Mauni Amawasya Snan on January 28.
A New Way to Connect with the Youth
While the Kumbh Mela is traditionally seen as a deeply spiritual occasion, the addition of luxury vehicles reflects a changing dynamic. A seer, speaking anonymously, explained that the luxury element is a way to connect with younger generations, many of whom are more drawn to social media than to religious rituals. “A little splash of luxury helps in connecting with the youth,” the seer said, acknowledging that many younger people might be less interested in religion itself but are drawn to the spectacle and social media appeal.
Another seer pointed out that the Kumbh Mela has long been a place for spiritual leaders with unique personalities. “We’ve had ‘Computer baba,’ ‘Gold baba,’ and ‘Tablet-waale baba,'” he said. “Their followers don’t find anything wrong in this because their focus is on the blessings.”
A Grand Celebration with a Spiritual Core
Despite the show of luxury, the ultimate goal of the Kumbh Mela remains spiritual salvation. One seer explained that the luxury vehicles and comfortable accommodations provided for seers are not for personal indulgence but are arranged by devotees as an expression of gratitude. “The goal is salvation,” the seer said. “But Maha Kumbh is also a grand celebration. The swanky cars we travel in or the comfortable places we stay in are a gesture of respect from our devotees, who have been blessed abundantly by God.”
This unique fusion of spirituality and luxury reflects the evolving nature of the Maha Kumbh Mela, where tradition meets modernity in a way that resonates with both the older and newer generations alike.

How to Make Delicious Shahi Paneer at Home
Shahi Paneer is a popular North Indian dish known for its rich, creamy, and flavorful gravy. It is often served in restaurants but can also be made easily at home with simple ingredients.
Step-by-Step Preparation:
1. Prepare the Base Ingredients:
Chop onions, tomatoes, ginger, and green chilies. Soak cashews or almonds in warm water to soften them. To keep the paneer cubes soft, you can immerse them in warm water for a few minutes.
2. Cook the Base Mixture:
Heat oil or butter in a pan. Add whole spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and cumin seeds. Sauté until fragrant. Then add onions, ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Cook until the onions turn soft or light brown. Add the chopped tomatoes and soaked nuts. Cook until the mixture becomes soft and mushy.
3. Cool and Blend:
Allow the mixture to cool completely. Transfer it to a blender and make a smooth paste. For a silky restaurant-style texture, strain the paste through a fine sieve.
4.Prepare the Gravy:
In another pan, heat butter or oil. Add powdered spices like turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Sauté for a few seconds on low heat. Add the blended paste and mix well. Cook until the oil separates from the sides of the pan.
5.Simmer and Finish:
Add water or milk to adjust the consistency of the gravy. Bring it to a gentle boil. Stir in fresh cream, crushed kasoori methi, and salt. Add the paneer cubes and simmer on low heat for about two to five minutes until the paneer absorbs the flavors.
6.Garnish and Serve:
Turn off the heat and add garam masala. You can also add a few drops of kewra or rose water for a royal aroma. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves or a swirl of cream.
Shahi Paneer is now ready to serve. It goes perfectly with naan, roti, or steamed rice. This simple recipe brings a touch of royal flavor to your dining table.
