Football: Ancelotti Claims Real Madrid’s Domestic Success Hinges on Defeating Barcelona
Following Real Madrid’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League, the team’s entire season now hinges on achieving success in domestic competitions. With a four-point deficit in La Liga and a scheduled appearance in the Copa Del Rey final, head coach Carlo Ancelotti emphasizes that their fortunes rest on overcoming their long-time rivals FC Barcelona.
This Sunday (IST), Madrid is set to face Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final before heading to Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys for a La Liga rematch against the Catalan side. Hansi Flick’s team has had the upper hand this season, defeating Real Madrid 4-0 and 5-2 in their La Liga encounters and in the Super Copa de España final, respectively.

“The two titles we are competing for, aside from the Club World Cup, depend on our ability to defeat Barcelona. That’s our only current uncertainty. To claim both competitions, we need to win both of these matches,” Ancelotti stated.

“We need to start strongly in the next game and concentrate on the Cup final. We believe we can achieve it. Clearly, we must make some adjustments, and we plan to do so,” Ancelotti expressed during a press conference ahead of their clash with Getafe on Thursday (IST).
There is considerable speculation surrounding Ancelotti’s future at the club, as reports indicate that Madrid is preparing for a post-Ancelotti era, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp being the frontrunners. Additionally, Ancelotti is under consideration for the Brazilian national team following the dismissal of Dorival Jr.
When asked if winning La Liga and Copa del Rey could secure his position at the club, he replied, “In football, anything is possible. I’m not surprised by anything, so anything can happen.”
“I hold no grudges against anyone. I cherish this role. I enjoyed my first tenure and I am thoroughly enjoying this second one. I hope it continues for as long as possible. If it ever does come to an end, I will be grateful and show my appreciation to this club, nothing else,” Ancelotti added.
