Father Holds Memorial Feast for Daughter Who Eloped with Lover in Chikkodi

Published

Belagavi: In a shocking and emotional incident from Chikkodi in Belagavi district, a grief-stricken father performed his daughter’s tithi (death anniversary ritual) and hosted a feast for relatives, believing her to be “dead to the family” after she eloped with her lover.

According to reports, the incident took place in Nagaral village. The father, identified as Shivagouda Patil, had four daughters. His youngest daughter had fallen in love with a young man from the same village. When the family opposed the relationship, the girl reportedly eloped with her lover.

Initially, Shivagouda filed a missing person complaint at the Raybag police station, suspecting his daughter was kidnapped. However, when it was later revealed that she had run away of her own will, the father was deeply hurt and felt dishonored in the community.

Unable to bear the emotional distress, Shivagouda decided to symbolically sever all ties with his daughter. He organized a tithi ceremony — a ritual usually performed for deceased family members and invited relatives and villagers to a feast, declaring that his daughter was “no longer alive” to him.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions in the local community, with some sympathizing with the father’s emotional pain, while others have criticized the extreme step as an outdated and harsh response to a personal choice.
