Fadnavis Links Nagpur Riots to Bangladesh Factor

Published

on

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Friday that investigations into the recent communal riots in Nagpur suggest a potential “Bangladeshi link.” He indicated that the police are exploring whether there were “larger designs” at play that were incited through social media.
“We have discovered that several social media posts were in Bengali—the dialect commonly spoken in Bangladesh. We will investigate whether this indicates a broader agenda,” he informed reporters.

He revealed that the alleged mastermind behind the riots, Fahim Khan of the Minorities Democratic Party, is from Malegaon in the Nashik district. “One of the key figures involved in the Nagpur riots is from Malegaon. A comprehensive investigation will be carried out, and those responsible for disturbing the peace will face consequences,” Fadnavis stated.

Additionally, he noted that cases have been filed against members of the VHP and Bajrang Dal. “If attacks on police personnel go unchecked, it could lead to a breakdown of law and order in the state. Therefore, we will ensure that the offenders are dealt with harshly,” Fadnavis warned.

He emphasized that the Nagpur incident should not be categorized as an intelligence failure. “We cannot label this as an intelligence failure; however, monitoring of social media post-noon was lacking. Inflammatory content was circulated on social media. While we have the capability to monitor these platforms, we need to cultivate the habit of utilizing it effectively.
“Today, violence is less prevalent on the streets and more prevalent online. The police response was prompt, as can be seen in the CCTV recordings,” he added.

Fadnavis noted an ongoing investigation into whether there were broader motives behind the Nagpur riots. “We’ve observed a pattern in previous incidents of violence across the country, and we are investigating if a similar pattern is evident in Nagpur as well. To date, over 100 individuals have been arrested,” he stated.

Meanwhile, police have reported that the alleged mastermind, Fahim Khan, disseminated inflammatory and altered videos prior to the violence. “Khan actively shared provocative content that incited hatred against another community and law enforcement,” said Cyber Cell DCP Lohit Matani.

Khan had previously led a protest at the Ganeshpeth police station to lodge a complaint against VHP and Bajrang Dal members for allegedly burning an effigy of Aurangzeb along with a religious chadar. After departing the police station, he reportedly shared a video accusing law enforcement of protecting VHP and Bajrang Dal protestors, which subsequently went viral and incited further unrest in Nagpur.

According to authorities, a 250-member “troll army” played a crucial role in facilitating the viral spread of this video on social media. Some posts were reportedly manipulated to intensify tensions. “The cloth chadar burned near Gandhi Gate bore no holy inscriptions; the videos were altered,” stated a cyber investigator.

Cyber sleuths have also identified social media users from Bangladesh who contributed to amplifying hate speech. “The intensity of the troll army was comparable to that of the rioters on the ground,” a cyber cell official remarked.
