Fadnavis Appoints Ujjwal Nikam as Special Public Prosecutor in the Murder Case of Massajog Sarpanch

In response to his appointment, Ujjwal Nikam expressed his concern for the villagers of Massajog who had initiated a hunger strike to advocate for his designation as the government lawyer. “I felt saddened to learn about the villagers’ hunger strike. On Tuesday, I communicated with Chief Minister Fadnavis about my willingness to take on the prosecution, leading to the official order being issued. I urge the residents to conclude their hunger strike as law and justice should take precedence, and no one should jeopardize their health. We will promptly take action once the police submit a charge sheet,” he stated.
However, anti-corruption activist Anjali Damania remarked, “Only one of the demands from Dhananjay Deshmukh and the Massajog villagers has been acknowledged, and that was only after their hunger strike. This is regrettable. One of their demands was for Ujjwal Nikam to oversee the case, and it was only after their protest that this request was granted. The Deshmukh family and the villagers’ plight is unfortunate; these decisions should have been made promptly. Whether it was forming a Special Investigative Team or transferring the case to the CID, these steps took three months, which is unacceptable.”
While the Deshmukh family and the villagers expressed relief that one of their demands concerning Nikam’s appointment was fulfilled, they resolved to continue their hunger strike until all their other demands were met. Following Fadnavis’s announcement, the Beed Superintendent of Police urged the villagers to end their hunger strike. Nevertheless, the protesters reiterated their stance, refusing to relent until their remaining demands were addressed, and commenced the second day of their demonstration by honoring the statue of the late Santosh Deshmukh.

Kerala HC Grants Relief to CM’s Daughter Veena Vijayan by Extending Status Quo in SFIO Case

This High Court ruling puts a temporary stop to further proceedings in the CMRL pay-off case stemming from the SFIO’s charge sheet. Previously, on April 16, a single bench of the High Court reviewed a petition from CMRL contesting the Additional Sessions Court-VII’s acceptance of the SFIO’s prosecution complaint.
CMRL challenged the order from the Additional District and Sessions Court–VII, arguing that they were not afforded an opportunity for a pre-cognizance hearing as stipulated under Section 223(1) of the BNSS. They contend that since the SFIO’s complaint was filed in March-April 2025, the BNSS provisions should apply.
The High Court’s ruling halts the issuance of summons related to the SFIO’s prosecution complaint, providing temporary relief to the accused, including Veena Vijayan.
