Emerging Sporting Icons from the Rising Talents of Indian Table Tennis

Published

on

India is making notable strides in sports administration, evident through its impressive achievements in various disciplines, particularly in table tennis. This is highlighted by near-podium finishes at the Olympics in this fast-paced sport, which ranks just behind squash in terms of intensity.

National table tennis coach Sourav Chakraborty, a distinguished player in his own right, is thrilled by the emergence of Indian men’s and women’s table tennis stars who have begun to shine on the global stage. Their victories against top-ranked opponents serve as an inspiring testament to the power of ambition and hard work. Chakraborty believes that the recipe for success lies in identifying promising talent and nurturing it to reach its full potential.

Recently, Indian table tennis players have been gaining significant recognition for their victories over the world’s top players. Figures like Mannika Batra, Sharat Kamal, Sreeja Akula, and Ahikiya Mukherjee have shown that they can compete fiercely against established names, disregarding rankings and reputations.

“Winning two matches against China at the World Championships in Busan this March, including victories over the world number one and two, is nothing short of a dream come true. I was fortunate to be there with the team,” stated Chakraborty, who currently serves as national coach under head coach Massimo Costantini.

Chakraborty attributes much of this progress to the government’s support, minimal interference, the introduction of beneficial schemes, and the increasing involvement of the private sector in sports development, particularly in table tennis.

Currently in Chennai for the World Table Tennis Star Contender – Chennai 2025 event, Chakraborty shared insights about the sport, its rising stars, and its future in an interview with The Statesman.

“The support players receive today, compared to what we had in the past, is remarkable. Organizations like the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), along with private entities helping organize events, have radically improved the landscape since 2017,” he said. “These events expose Indian athletes to world-class competitors, allowing them to interact and compete without the fear that previously hindered them.”

While pioneers like Manjit Dua, Kamlesh Mehta, Manmeet Singh, and Sudhir Phadke laid the groundwork for the sport, contemporary figures such as Mannika Batra and Sharat Kamal have elevated the game in the eyes of fans and become icons in their own right, according to Chakraborty.

“Players like Mannika, Sreeja, and Ahikiya from the women’s team, along with Sharat Kamal, Manav Thakkar, and Manush Shah, exemplify excellence. The younger generation gives us confidence in India’s future in table tennis,” Chakraborty remarked. A former left-handed player renowned for his dramatic style and tactical prowess, he made significant contributions to the sport both in India and internationally.

“Today’s players have developed a belief in their ability to compete with the best in the world, exemplified by Sharat’s talent and Mannika’s rise as table tennis’s ambassador through her on-court achievements and off-court decisions to prioritize her sport,” he added.

When asked about the coaching process, he said, “Indian players have matured to the point where they can implement any mid-match strategies we suggest. At this level, they require just the critical guidance from a coach who sees the bigger picture at the moment. Players like Mannika, Sreeja, and Ahikiya show immense promise, with Diya, the reigning national champion, standing out as a rising star. Also, the likes of Manav Thakkar, Manush, and Yashaswini are key to the future of table tennis in India.”

Given that table tennis can be an expensive sport, with costs related to equipment, facilities, and coaching, does this limit access for players from less privileged backgrounds?

Chakraborty believes that recent sports administration reforms have created a more inclusive environment, focusing on talent identification through initiatives like Khelo India, which supports underprivileged youngsters who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. Currently, 120 players in table tennis are receiving assistance from various government programs.

“They are carefully selecting the best talent. The processes involved are thorough, with committees that include experienced players. These committees ensure that deserving talents receive support,” he explained. “The TTFI has made significant strides, and today’s players benefit from comprehensive support. Their only responsibility is to perform, and some even have their sponsors now. The corporate sector’s involvement has significantly uplifted the sport’s standards compared to decades ago,” added Chakraborty.

With near-podium finishes in the Olympics, these athletes are not only setting benchmarks for future generations but also inspiring a new wave of icons in the sport.

Looking back, the earlier Indian teams, including Manjit Dua, Kamlesh Mehta, Manmeet Singh, and Sudhir Phadke, made remarkable contributions, even positioning India at 12th globally at one point. Their individual and collective achievements, along with legends like Indu Puri, continue to inspire upcoming players, Chakraborty reflected.

IPL 2026 : In a dramatic IPL 2026 clash, Royal Challengers Bengaluru player Tim David has landed in controversy for allegedly making an obscene gesture after his team’s thrilling win against Mumbai Indians.

The incident took place during the 54th match of the Indian Premier League in Raipur. Batting first, Mumbai Indians scored 167 runs in 20 overs and set a competitive target for RCB.

While chasing the target, Royal Challengers Bengaluru needed 15 runs in the final over. The match went down to the last ball, where RCB required two runs for victory. Rasikh Dar helped the team secure a thrilling win in the final delivery.

Soon after the victory, Tim David, who was in the dugout, was seen allegedly showing his middle finger towards the Mumbai Indians camp during the celebrations. The video of the incident quickly went viral on social media and triggered criticism from cricket fans.

Reports suggest that match officials could take disciplinary action against the Australian batter. Under the ICC Code of Conduct, obscene or offensive gestures are considered a serious offence.

Sports: Lucknow Super Giants’ captain Rishabh Pant faced criticism after a failed Super Over decision against Kolkata Knight Riders. LSG sent Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram to bat, with Pooran on strike against Sunil Narine.

Pooran was bowled on the first ball, leading to heavy criticism from fans. Many questioned the decision, especially because Narine had earlier troubled Pooran in a past Super Over.

LSG coach Justin Langer defended the move. He said the team trusted Pooran as he has faced Narine many times and has a strong record against him. He added that teams must back their best players even in difficult moments.

Langer also said Pooran is one of the best T20 players in recent years but is currently low on confidence. He assured that the team is working hard to help him regain form
