‘Elio’ Cast Discusses the Film’s Themes of Love, Loss, and Belonging
At the recent red carpet premiere in New York, Zoe Saldaña, Yonas Kibreab, and Jameela Jamil shared their thoughts on what sets ‘Elio’ apart and the importance of its message.
Zoe Saldaña, who voices Elio’s aunt Olga, expressed her pride in the film’s meaningful narrative. “I hope fans will come to see the dedication the animators have put into ‘Elio’,” Saldaña said. “It’s a beautiful story filled with heart, humor, and fun.”
Saldaña described her character, Olga, as a representation of pure, unconditional love. She highlighted a pivotal line from the film: “Olga tells Elio, ‘I may not understand you, but I love you.’ That’s the kind of love we all need—love that doesn’t require complete understanding but remains steadfast and strong.” She hopes parents will take away this important message.
At the center of the story is Elio, a young boy facing significant emotions and adventures. Yonas Kibreab, who lends his voice to Elio, mentioned that the story resonates with anyone who feels out of place.

“No matter your age, there’s something in this film for everyone,” Kibreab said. “The biggest lesson I learned while working on ‘Elio’ is to remain true to myself and not feel pressured to change for acceptance.”
He also commented on the film’s honest depiction of grief and loneliness, emphasizing that while these feelings are real, there is also comfort and hope to be found. “If you ever feel grief or loneliness like Elio sometimes does, just know it will be okay. You’ll get through it, just as he does,” he added.
Jameela Jamil, who voices the compelling Ambassador Questa, emphasized the film’s hopeful message. “’Elio’ embodies hope—it’s about how the most unexpected people can achieve extraordinary things,” she remarked. “That’s what makes Elio so special; he surprises everyone, including himself.”
Bursting with vibrant animation, witty moments, and timeless lessons for all ages, ‘Elio’ is set to be a delightful addition to the Pixar legacy. It will premiere in Indian theaters on June 20, in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
