Ektaa Kapoor Shares a Heartfelt Birthday Message for ‘India’s Tulsi,’ Smriti Irani
Her heartfelt note expressed deep admiration: “So many years of friendship… we’ll soon celebrate 25 years of ‘Kyunki’! I’ve witnessed your evolution into a formidable talent—a true star. Happy birthday, my friend, my favorite meme sharer, Ravi Masi, and for countless fans, INDIA’S TULSI!”
For those unfamiliar, “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” co-produced by Ektaa and her mother Shobha Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms, was a cultural phenomenon that aired from 2000 to 2008 on Star Plus. The series catapulted Smriti Irani to stardom as the beloved character Tulsi Virani.
While celebrating Smriti, Ektaa shared unfiltered views on the current state of Indian content. In her Instagram Stories, she addressed the frequent criticism that Indian shows and films fall short compared to international standards. Rather than placing blame on creators, she pointed to an unexpected source—the audience!
She wrote: “When Indian creators lament that our content doesn’t measure up to international TV series and films… I can’t help but speculate whether it’s ego, frustration, or simply misplaced accusations.”
Ektaa underscored that films with solid storytelling, such as “Superboys of Malegaon” and “The Buckingham Murders” (directed by Hansal Mehta), have struggled at the box office, indicating that the appetite for quality content may not be as significant as often claimed. “When these films don’t resonate with viewers, should we not identify the real culprits—the audience?” she posed.
She compared India’s content consumption to an adolescent experiencing growing pains, suggesting that the country is still evolving in this regard. Her perspective sparked discussions online, with some advocating for audience support of meaningful cinema while others argued it is the creators’ responsibility to innovate, regardless of commercial viability.
