Eighteen People Killed in NDLS Stampede, Including Eleven Women and Five Children; Dozens Injured
The Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, addressing a news agency about the incident, noted that an unprecedented number of devotees are arriving for the Maha Kumbh festivities, prompting the operation of a record number of special trains for their convenience.
Concerning the unfortunate event, he explained that as passengers were gathering on Platform 14 for the Prayagraj Express, an announcement regarding the arrival of a Special Train at Platform 12 led to crowds moving en masse towards that platform. During this surge, a passenger lost their footing, causing a domino effect that resulted in the stampede.
It has been suggested that confusion may have arisen from the announcements of multiple trains bearing similar names, all starting with ‘Prayagraj,’ prompting frantic movement to the other platform. The investigation into the incident will rely heavily on CCTV footage, and a high-level committee has been established by Railway officials to examine the circumstances further.
The victims have been identified as Asha Devi, Pinky Devi, Sheela Devi, Vyom, Poonam Devi, Lalita Devi, Suruchi, Krishna Devi, Vijay, Neeraj, Shanti Devi, Pooja Kumar, Sangeeta Malik, Poonam, Mamta Jha, Riya Singh, Baby Kumari, and Manoj.
Reports indicate that many of the injured suffered lower limb injuries, with some facing bone fractures. While some have been discharged, others remain under observation, receiving care from a team of 15 doctors at LNJP Hospital.
Emergency services were alerted around 9:55 PM on Saturday, rapidly rushing the injured to hospitals, though some were tragically declared dead on arrival. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with people slipping down stairs and falling over one another amidst the overwhelming crowd.
One woman, a relative of a deceased victim, highlighted the chaos caused by the sudden announcement about the train’s platform: “There was an unexpected announcement, and people began to run, leading to the stampede,” she shared.
Some individuals affected by the incident reported losing their belongings, with a woman traveling to Bihar detailing the distressing experience she had while managing her small child amidst the turmoil.
In response to this tragic event, Indian Railways has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, alongside Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh for individuals with minor injuries.
Porters at the station played a vital role in rescue efforts, assisting authorities in transporting the injured to ambulances. DCP Railways at New Delhi, KPS Malhotra, remarked that given the current situation, they are adjusting policing measures to accommodate the increased foot traffic and additional trains necessary to manage the situation effectively.
He emphasized the importance of managing crowd dynamics to prevent dangerous transitions from groups to crowds and ultimately to mobs, stating that the primary focus now is on current management and future prevention measures.
