Eight Teams Conquer Various Challenges Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy

India enters the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with a talented squad, despite losing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to a late back injury.
Building on the majority of their squad from the 2023 World Cup, where they were runners-up, India boasts a strong batting lineup led by experienced captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli.
—
The bowling unit sees the introduction of fresh talents like Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy, who are ready to make their mark.
—
The squad features several all-rounders, including Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, adding depth to both batting and bowling departments.
Hardik Pandya, a key player in India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, will play a vital role in the Champions Trophy. With Bumrah unavailable, he may have to take on extra responsibilities with the ball and is expected to contribute significantly as a power-hitter lower down the order.
Australia faces injury woes
Two-time Champions Trophy winners Australia aim to claim another title, but injuries to key players—including captain Pat Cummins, pacers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and all-rounder Mitch Marsh—have shifted their plans. With Marcus Stoinis’ surprising retirement, the team has called in several replacements.
Despite these challenges, seasoned players like Steve Smith, who recently led the team to a Test series victory in Sri Lanka, will be crucial. Alongside explosive all-rounders Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell, who were pivotal in Australia’s 2023 World Cup success, they will spearhead the team’s efforts. Other experienced players in the squad include Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, and Adam Zampa.
Travis Head, known for his hard-hitting abilities, is expected to be key for Australia, having excelled in the 2023 World Cup semi-final and final against South Africa and India, respectively.
South Africa’s pursuit of success
Having won the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998, South Africa seeks to claim another ICC title, entering the tournament ranked fifth in the ODI Team Rankings. Led by Temba Bavuma, they will face a challenging group that includes Australia and England, starting with a match against Afghanistan in Karachi.
The Proteas’ bowling attack features strong pace options like Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Wiaan Mulder, complemented by talented spinners like Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj. Fans will be eager to watch powerful hitter Heinrich Klaasen, who is coming off an impressive 2024 season.
England’s quest for their first Champions Trophy
After suffering a 3-0 series loss to India, Jos Buttler’s England is determined to improve their Champions Trophy history and pursue their first title. They have come close in the past under the leadership of Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook, finishing as runners-up in 2004 and 2013, respectively.
With a disappointing seventh-place finish in the 2023 World Cup and four ODI series losses since, England’s form has been shaky. However, under new white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum, they aim for a strong title challenge. Buttler, Joe Root, and rising star Harry Brook will anchor the batting lineup, supported by dynamic players like Ben Duckett and Phil Salt.
England’s pace lineup includes Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood, and Saqib Mahmood, while Adil Rashid’s spin bowling will be crucial in the UAE and Pakistan. With the injury to all-rounder Jacob Bethell, Rashid will need to carry the spin department’s workload alongside Liam Livingstone and Joe Root.
Afghanistan prepares for their debut
Having achieved significant victories against England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the 2023 World Cup, Afghanistan has qualified for their first ICC Champions Trophy. Fresh off their first semi-final appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, they come in with confidence and are a formidable opponent.
Azmatullah Omarzai, named ICC ODI Player of the Year for 2024, has been a key player in Afghanistan’s recent successes, scoring 353 runs and taking nine wickets in the last World Cup. With Naveen ul-Haq sidelined, Omarzai will further bolster Afghanistan’s bowling attack.
Bangladesh seeks glory as underdogs
Bangladesh, often seen as underdogs, remains competitive on the international stage. Despite recent inconsistent performances, they are determined to make an impact under the leadership of Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who has prior experience leading the team to the Champions Trophy semi-finals in 2017. Shanto will have the support of seasoned players like Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim.
Shanto stated, “We are going to the Champions Trophy to become champions. All eight teams deserve to be champions. I believe our team has the ability. No one will feel extra pressure,” as they prepare for their opening match against India on February 20.
Injury leads to change in New Zealand’s lineup
New Zealand has made a last-minute adjustment to their Champions Trophy squad, with pacer Ben Sears ruled out due to a hamstring injury. Jacob Duffy has been named as his replacement.
Duffy, with just 10 ODIs under his belt since his debut in July 2022, has taken 18 wickets at an average of 25.94 and an economy of 6.25. His last appearance for the Black Caps was earlier this year when he claimed two wickets against Sri Lanka.
Hosts Pakistan aim to defend their title
As hosts, Pakistan aims to overcome challenges, including recent coaching instability, with Aqib Javed serving as interim head coach. They hope to replicate their successful 2017 Champions Trophy run, relying heavily on opener Fakhar Zaman, alongside star players Mohammed Rizwan and Babar Azam.
Babar, ranked first in ODIs, is coming off impressive performances and will need to maintain that momentum for Pakistan to succeed in their home tournament. This is the first ICC tournament for the team since Babar stepped down as captain after the 2023 World Cup, and his leadership will be critical as they navigate the intense pressure of the competition.
Only time will tell if Rizwan and his team can rise to the occasion.

Referee for Spanish Copa del Rey Final Breaks Down in Tears Over Attacks from Real Madrid TV

Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, the referee for the upcoming Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, became emotional on Friday while discussing the immense pressure he’s under prior to the match.
In response to questions about a video released by Real Madrid’s Club TV (RMTV), which points out alleged mistakes he made in previous encounters, de Burgos Bengoetxea opened up about the emotional toll. This tactic is often used by RMTV to sway referees ahead of important games.
—
When addressing the recent video, he struggled to hold back tears, sharing how it affects both him and his family, as reported by Xinhua.
—
“It’s tough when your son comes home from school and tells you that his friends call his father a thief. It’s unfair, and it goes beyond just professionals—many families are impacted, and everyone should take a moment to think about their actions,” he said.
Pablo Gonzalez Fuentes, the VAR official for Saturday’s match, also criticized RMTV’s strategy, emphasizing the negative consequences of such videos. “They need to acknowledge the aftermath of these actions,” he remarked, noting that they often lead to online harassment of officials.
“We see community managers on official social media instigating attacks for likes. Footballers’ actions often imply that we’re dishonest. When journalists use terms like ‘theft,’ that frustration spills over onto the kids of referees,” he added. “We must confront these issues to restore a healthier and cleaner football environment.”
On the other hand, Real Madrid is preparing for the match amid serious injury concerns.
French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga will miss the rest of the season after suffering a significant groin injury during Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Getafe.
Camavinga came on for David Alaba at halftime, but had to leave the field in the 87th minute due to his injury, despite Madrid having used all their substitutions.
After the match, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti indicated that both Alaba and Camavinga might not be ready for Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against FC Barcelona. However, tests conducted Thursday revealed that Camavinga’s injury is more severe than initially believed.

Kalinga Super Cup: Blasters Take on Mohun Bagan, Goa Sets Sights on Punjab in Quarterfinals

The Kalinga Super Cup 2025 is down to its final eight teams, with Kerala Blasters FC set to face reigning ISL Shield and Cup champions, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, while FC Goa goes up against Punjab FC on the tournament’s opening day at Kalinga Stadium this Saturday.
The Round of 16 matches delivered some unexpected outcomes, including the surprise exits of defending champions East Bengal FC and last year’s runners-up Odisha FC. In a stunning upset, I-League club Inter Kashi knocked out ISL 2024-25 cup runners-up Bengaluru FC on penalties.
—
Meanwhile, ISL clubs Mumbai City FC and NorthEast United FC each made a strong statement with decisive wins over Chennaiyin FC (4-0) and Mohammedan Sporting (6-0), respectively.
—
On the first day of the quarterfinals, two of India’s most beloved clubs will clash as Kerala Blasters FC meet Mohun Bagan Super Giant, while FC Goa takes on Punjab FC.
A rejuvenated Kerala Blasters FC will face Mohun Bagan SG in their first quarterfinal appearance, under new head coach David Català, who joined just weeks prior to the tournament.
Having defeated the defending champions, the Blasters enter with newfound confidence, though they acknowledge the challenge posed by a Mohun Bagan side featuring several players from their developmental squad. Català remains cautious about the quality of the Green and Maroons.
“We approach every match with the same mindset: to win. We just need to stay focused,” Català remarked. “Facing a younger MBSG team does not grant us an advantage, as they are competent and skilled players, having proven themselves as league and ISL Cup champions. It will be a tough match.”
Mohun Bagan SG, who received a bye in the Round of 16 due to Churchill Brothers’ withdrawal, have already secured a spot in the AFC Champions League Two. They plan to give their younger talents a chance, appointing midfielder Deepak Tangri as the team captain.
Assistant coach Bastab Roy, stepping in for José Molina, emphasizes using this tournament as a platform for experience. “Our main goal is to play, enjoy the sport, and assess how the young players handle this level. There’s no pressure to win,” he stated. “However, we also have seasoned players like Deepak, Sahal, and Ashique, who will contribute significantly.”
The second quarterfinal pits FC Goa against Punjab FC, with the Gaurs historically favored, having never lost to Punjab in their four previous encounters, with the latter only managing a draw.
Nonetheless, FC Goa remains cautious. Head coach Manolo Márquez noted, “Every match against Punjab FC has been challenging. While we were fortunate to win both encounters this season, each game feels like a final.”
Punjab FC’s coach Panagiotis Dilmperis downplayed the significance of their previous victory over Odisha FC, stating, “That match is behind us; we’re focused solely on tomorrow’s game.”
Dilmperis highlighted the need for patience in the face of FC Goa’s strength. “We are up against the ISL’s second-placed team, who possess quality and a solid tactical approach. As this is a knockout match, a draw may lead to penalties, so strategy will be crucial.”
Both matches will be broadcast live on Star Sports 3 and streamed on JioHotstar, with Kerala Blasters FC vs Mohun Bagan SG starting at 4:30 PM IST and FC Goa vs Punjab FC at 8:00 PM.
