Ed Sheeran Provides Clarification on Bengaluru Police Incident

Global pop icon Ed Sheeran encountered a hiccup with the Bengaluru police during a spontaneous street performance, as authorities intervened, citing a lack of prior permission for the event. However, Sheeran took to Instagram Stories to clarify that they had indeed obtained the necessary permissions. He wrote, “We had permission to busk, btw, hence us playing in that exact spot—it was planned out beforehand. It wasn’t just us randomly showing up. All good though. See ya at the show tonight x.”

Ed Sheeran was performing opposite the MG Road Metro station on Church Street, where two microphones and a guitar were set up for his act. In a video circulating on social media, moments after he began an acoustic rendition of his hit song “Shape of You,” a police officer arrived and cut off the speakers, halting his performance.

Reports suggest that the police had received a complaint regarding public nuisance related to the performance. The footage quickly gained attention online, with one Reddit user commenting, “Hahaha. One of those ‘Only in India’ moments.” Another user added, “It’s just very embarrassing.” While some criticized law enforcement for interrupting the show, others defended the police, stating they were merely fulfilling their duties.

Ed Sheeran is set to perform at Bengaluru’s NICE Grounds today, February 9, 2025, marking his inaugural concert in the city. Following the Bengaluru show, he will perform at Shillong’s JN Stadium on February 12, and will conclude his tour on February 15 at Leisure Valley Grounds, Gurugram.
