Dragging While Walking May Increase Risk

Published

on

Lifestyle: Walking by dragging the feet can affect a person’s balance and movement. This walking pattern is medically known as a shuffling gait.

People with a shuffling gait often take shorter and slower steps. Their feet may not lift properly from the ground. This can increase the risk of tripping and falling.

Dragging the feet can also put extra stress on the ankles, knees, hips and lower back. The muscles in the calves and shins may have to work harder. This can lead to muscle fatigue and discomfort.

Several factors can cause a shuffling gait. Weakness in the muscles that lift the foot is one common reason. Foot or ankle pain can also affect normal walking.

Some neurological conditions and nerve problems can change a person’s walking pattern. Conditions such as Parkinson’s disease may also cause shuffling while walking.

Wearing heavy, loose or damaged footwear can make the problem worse. Tiredness, stiffness and age-related changes may also reduce the height of each step.

Experts recommend wearing lightweight and well-fitted shoes with a good grip. Simple exercises such as toe raises and ankle stretches can help strengthen the lower legs.

People can also practise taking careful steps by lifting the feet properly. The foot should move naturally from the heel to the toe while walking.

If shuffling begins suddenly or leads to repeated trips and falls, medical advice should be sought. A healthcare professional can identify the possible cause and suggest suitable treatment or exercises.

Banana blossom is one of the popular choices. Its flaky texture makes it suitable for dishes such as plant-based fish and chips.

Jackfruit is another useful option. Its soft and stringy texture works well in shredded fish and mock tuna dishes.

Tofu can also be used as a fish substitute. It can be cut into fillets or sticks and then seasoned and battered.
