Divya Dutta Discusses Industry Sexism: “There’s Still Much Work Ahead”

Published

on

Bollywood actress Divya Dutta is celebrated for her impactful performances and her candidness. In a recent interview with IANS, she opened up about the ongoing issue of gender inequality in the film industry, the nuances of historical narratives, and the thrilling projects she’s currently involved in.

Divya acknowledges that while Bollywood has made some progress over the years, the industry remains largely male-dominated. “We are certainly making advancements towards equality, but there’s still a significant journey ahead,” she stated.

Discussing historical films, she highlighted that the extent of female representation largely hinges on the storyline. “If the narrative centers on figures like Rani Lakshmi Bai or Indira Gandhi, they naturally take the spotlight. However, if the focus is on Maharaj Sambhaji, then the emphasis shifts to him. It’s all about whose story is being portrayed,” she clarified.

Divya recently starred in the historical drama ‘Chhaava’, where she plays the role of Rajmata Sohra Bai. The ‘Veer-Zaara’ actress expressed her admiration for the extensive research that informed her character. “When they approached me for the role, they shared detailed sketches and historical references, which helped me fully immerse myself in the character. The sets, costumes, and dialogues were meticulously crafted—it truly felt like stepping back in time,” she remarked. This role marks her first significant historical portrayal, and she described the experience as “beautiful and immersive.”

And she shows no signs of slowing down! Next, Divya will appear alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Jimmy Shergill in an upcoming film. Additionally, she’s involved in a biopic featuring Neeraj Kabi, a web series, and two English films.
