Dia Mirza on ‘Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge’: “A Lack of Script and Voice for Women”

Actress Dia Mirza recently shared her insights on the blatant neglect of women’s perspectives in Bollywood during her early career. Reflecting on her time filming ‘Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge’ (2002), she recounted how her inquiries regarding her character and the script were dismissed.

In an interview with Zoom, Dia explained that shooting schedules were predominantly dictated by the availability of male actors and locations, leaving female stars with minimal influence. “This continues today, but there’s a greater awareness of the narrative now. Back then, we were left in the dark,” she recounted.

Dia Mirza starred opposite Salman Khan in ‘Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge,’ a project directed by Pankaj Parashar. Initially thrilled to collaborate with a renowned director famous for ‘ChaalBaaz’ (1989) and a major production company, Dia was soon taken aback by the lack of preparation involved.

“The script was never shared with us ahead of time. There were no workshops or readings. We often received scenes at the last minute, and some were even written in Bhojpuri, despite my character being from Rajasthan,” she recalled.

The situation extended to costume arrangements as well. “My outfits were being sewn at the last minute and just delivered to us,” she emphasized, pointing out the disorganization that prevailed.

One of the most startling experiences for Dia was the general attitude towards female actors. When she queried the choice of a ‘chaniya choli’ for her character, she was brushed off.

“They simply told me, ‘You ask too many questions. Don’t do that. Just do what you’re told,’” she recounted.

This experience left a profound mark on her. “The complete disregard for a woman’s space and her right to question was suffocating. It felt like we weren’t allowed to understand better in order to perform better,” she noted.
