Dhanush Demands ₹1 Crore in Damages from Nayanthara Instead of Seeking Interim Relief

Published

on

Last year, the legal dispute between Dhanush and Nayanthara regarding the use of behind-the-scenes clips in the documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale’ captured significant attention. Currently, Dhanush has opted to pursue the primary lawsuit against both Nayanthara and her husband, Vignesh Sivan, foregoing the need for interim relief. His production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, has filed a civil lawsuit claiming 1 crore in damages due to alleged copyright infringement. The clip in question is from the film ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,’ which Dhanush produced. Furthermore, the legal affidavit alleges unprofessional behavior by Vignesh Sivan, asserting that he disproportionately focused on Nayanthara, neglecting the other cast members.

This turn of events follows the Madras High Court’s decision to reject an interim injunction request, citing that the documentary was already released on November 18, 2024. However, the court has agreed to hear the main case on April 9, 2025.

Live Law reported on the court’s ruling: “It is common ground between the parties that the documentary has been exhibited since 18th November 2024. Without prejudice to the contentions raised in the interim application, the plaintiff is ready and willing to proceed with the suit on merits. Therefore, OA 958 of 2024 is closed without any orders.”

In the affidavit, Wunderbar also criticizes Vignesh Sivan for his professional conduct, stating, “The fourth respondent (Mr. Sivan) unnecessarily concentrated his efforts solely on the third respondent (Ms. Nayanthara), neglecting the rest of the cast and crew by insisting on multiple re-takes of scenes featuring her in order to ensure her best performance, while not prioritizing the contributions of the other actors.”

The production company further claimed, “According to clause 4 of the artist agreement, the film producer retains copyright over all performances by artists in relation to the cinematographic work. This means that any footage or video of the artist captured on set while in character vests solely with the producer.”

For those who may not be familiar with the situation, the conflict was highlighted when Nayanthara released an open letter to Dhanush, addressing the matter. In her letter, she explained that Dhanush had served her and Vignesh Sivan with a 10-crore lawsuit, accusing her of using a three-second BTS clip from ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ in her Netflix documentary. Nayanthara elaborated that the clip was filmed on their personal devices, and despite her team’s attempts to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Dhanush over two years, they were unsuccessful, prompting them to use the clip taken on a personal phone.
