DGP Ramachandra Rao Expresses Concern Over Gold Smuggling Case: “She Hasn’t Returned Home Since Her Marriage”

Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation and stepfather of Kannada actress Ranya Rao, stated on Thursday that he was completely “unaware” of the business dealings involving his stepdaughter and her husband. He expressed his “huge disappointment” upon learning that 14 kg of smuggled gold was discovered with Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).

In a statement to ANI, DGP Rao revealed that Ranya had not visited his home since her marriage to Jatin Hukkeri four months ago. He remarked, “Ranya was married to Jatin Hukkeri four months back, and since then she has never come to our house. We are utterly unaware of her and Jatin’s business activities.”

Meanwhile, Jatin Hukkeri’s office declined to issue any statements or comments regarding the allegations against his wife.

Ranya, celebrated for her roles in Kannada films such as ‘Maanikya’ and ‘Pataki’, was detained earlier this week by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) upon her return from Dubai on March 3, in connection with a gold smuggling investigation. Authorities allege she attempted to bring 14.8 kilograms of gold into the country illegally.

DGP Ramachandra Rao expressed his astonishment and disappointment upon hearing about Ranya’s alleged involvement in the gold smuggling case, stating, “This news has come as a complete shock and a significant letdown. If any laws have been violated, appropriate legal action will follow.”

Ranya’s arrest has sparked considerable public and political discourse. Congress MLA AS Ponnanna, who also serves as a legal advisor to the Karnataka Chief Minister, asserted that the law would be applied equally, independent of Ranya’s connections. “She faces serious smuggling accusations, and the legal process will unfold regardless of her ties to the DGP, Chief Minister, or Prime Minister. If any official collusion exists, the investigation will uncover it,” he stated to the media.

On March 4, Ranya Rao appeared before a special court for financial offences and was remanded to judicial custody until March 18. Before her transfer to custody, she was subjected to a medical examination at Bowring Hospital in Bengaluru. During her questioning, Ranya reportedly claimed her trip to Dubai was for business purposes, while authorities maintain that it was related to the illegal gold importation.

Ranya Rao’s bail application is scheduled for hearing on Thursday at the 24th ACMM court in Bengaluru.
