Devotees in Long Lines for Sabarimala Ayyappa Swamy Darshan

Mangaluru/Pathinanthitta: Thousands of devotees are arriving at Sabarimala, Kerala’s major religious site, to witness the Makar Jyothi. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), which is ensuring adherence to the Kerala High Court’s directive to prevent any untoward incidents during the arrival of Ayyappa devotees, has made all necessary arrangements for the Makaravilakku festival. From January 8 to 15, 2025, only 5,000 devotees per day are allowed to book slots for the Sannidhanam spot.

The Makaravilakku festival, also known as Makar Jyothi, is marked by the sacred Karpura pooja at Ponnambalamedu. Every year, the festival attracts a large number of devotees. Devotees from various parts of the country, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, are waiting to witness the Makar Jyothi today (Jan 14). As a precautionary measure, the booking limit has been set to 40,000 today for public safety.

On December 30, a heavy crowd of around 15,000 devotees crossed the queue, attempting to enter the temple directly to the 18 steps, leading to a major stampede. Following this incident, many devotees had protested due to the disorder. In response, the TDB has strengthened the management of queues and increased security to prevent such incidents. The Kerala High Court had expressed concern about the crowd density.

Shahi Paneer is a popular North Indian dish known for its rich, creamy, and flavorful gravy. It is often served in restaurants but can also be made easily at home with simple ingredients.

Step-by-Step Preparation:

 1. Prepare the Base Ingredients:

Chop onions, tomatoes, ginger, and green chilies. Soak cashews or almonds in warm water to soften them. To keep the paneer cubes soft, you can immerse them in warm water for a few minutes.

2. Cook the Base Mixture:

Heat oil or butter in a pan. Add whole spices such as cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and cumin seeds. Sauté until fragrant. Then add onions, ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Cook until the onions turn soft or light brown. Add the chopped tomatoes and soaked nuts. Cook until the mixture becomes soft and mushy.

3. Cool and Blend:

Allow the mixture to cool completely. Transfer it to a blender and make a smooth paste. For a silky restaurant-style texture, strain the paste through a fine sieve.

4.Prepare the Gravy:

In another pan, heat butter or oil. Add powdered spices like turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Sauté for a few seconds on low heat. Add the blended paste and mix well. Cook until the oil separates from the sides of the pan.

5.Simmer and Finish:

Add water or milk to adjust the consistency of the gravy. Bring it to a gentle boil. Stir in fresh cream, crushed kasoori methi, and salt. Add the paneer cubes and simmer on low heat for about two to five minutes until the paneer absorbs the flavors.

6.Garnish and Serve:

Turn off the heat and add garam masala. You can also add a few drops of kewra or rose water for a royal aroma. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves or a swirl of cream.

Shahi Paneer is now ready to serve. It goes perfectly with naan, roti, or steamed rice. This simple recipe brings a touch of royal flavor to your dining table.
