Dakota Johnson is candidly sharing her thoughts on the current landscape of Hollywood. During an engaging chat on the popular YouTube series ‘Hot Ones’, she referred to the industry as “a bit of a mess,” criticizing studios for their tendency to recycle the same narratives.

When host Sean Evans inquired about Hollywood’s reluctance to embrace risk, Johnson responded straightforwardly. She highlighted that many significant creative choices are often made by those who don’t truly appreciate or understand films.

“When decisions are dictated by a committee, and particularly by those who don’t watch movies or lack knowledge about them, it complicates the process,” Johnson remarked.

She emphasized that studios are overly reliant on familiar formulas, wrongly believing that past successes can be replicated. However, she believes audiences crave something different. “People desire fresh experiences, new emotions, and unique stories,” she stated. “Yet Hollywood continues to rely on remakes. Honestly, it’s a bit chaotic right now, isn’t it?”

On a personal note, Dakota’s life has also been making waves, as reports indicate she and Coldplay’s Chris Martin have separated after nearly eight years together. However, she opted not to discuss the breakup during her recent appearance on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’. Instead, she focused on her upcoming film ‘Materialists’ and expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with director Celine Song.

Johnson expressed her admiration for Song, saying she’s been “obsessed” with the filmmaker since experiencing her Oscar-nominated debut, ‘Past Lives’. ‘Materialists’ is a romantic comedy featuring a young New York matchmaker, played by Johnson, who finds herself torn between an ideal partner and a complicated ex. The film is set to premiere on June 13, 2025, with A24 confirming the date via a whimsical image of a heart-shaped cake adorned with the movie title.

The cast includes Zoe Winters, Marin Ireland, ‘Succession’ star Dasha Nekrasova, and Louisa Jacobson. Filming took place in New York from April to June 2024. The project is spearheaded by Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films, alongside David Hinojosa of 2AM.
