D Gukesh Becomes New India No. 1, Overtakes Arjun Erigaisi; R Praggnanandhaa Climbs to Third Position, Surpasses Viswanathan Anand
D Gukesh claimed the title of India’s new No. 1 chess player after a hard-fought victory over Vincent Keymer in a 72-move battle at the ongoing Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee. The game, which was the longest of Round 5 in the Masters section, saw Gukesh emerge victorious after a nerve-wracking contest.
This win has propelled Gukesh to the top of the live ratings, overtaking Arjun Erigaisi, who had been India’s No. 1 before the tournament. Gukesh’s live rating now stands at 2784 after gaining seven Elo points, while Erigaisi’s rating dropped to 2779 after losing 21.5 points. Erigaisi, who had been in the 2800-club before, has struggled in this tournament, losing three games and drawing twice. He currently shares the joint-bottom position with Leon Luke Mendonca.
In contrast, Gukesh remains unbeaten in the tournament, with two wins and three draws. He drew against Vladimir Fedoseev and Alexey Sarana but secured wins against Anish Giri and Vincent Keymer.
The live ratings remain fluid, and with eight rounds left in the Swiss system, Erigaisi still has the opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 spot from Gukesh. Meanwhile, despite not playing in the tournament, Magnus Carlsen maintains his lead in the live ratings with 2832.5, followed by American GM Hikaru Nakamura (2802) and Fabiano Caruana (2798).
In another notable development, R Praggnanandhaa has climbed three positions, now ranked 10th with a rating of 2753.9, while Viswanathan Anand has fallen to 11th with a rating of 2750.
