Washington: The United States is considering imposing a 100% tariff, instead of the previously proposed 500% tariff, on countries importing Russian crude oil, including India.

The proposal is part of a bipartisan bill aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The original bill, introduced by late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, suggested a 500% tariff on imports from countries purchasing Russian energy.

The revised version lowers the maximum tariff to 100%, reducing concerns over disruptions to global energy markets and the economies of US allies.

The updated proposal also allows exemptions for countries importing less than 15% of Russia’s natural gas and making efforts to reduce their dependence.

Countries such as Japan, France, Hungary, and Belgium could qualify for these exemptions under the revised bill.

Before his recent death, Senator Lindsey Graham said he had reached an understanding with President Donald Trump to move the legislation forward.

The proposed tariff mainly targets the top importers of Russian crude oil, including China, India, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan.

The revised bill also gives President Donald Trump the authority to grant exemptions if doing so serves US national interests.

Earlier, the Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing trade concerns, and later added another 25% penalty over India’s Russian oil imports, taking the total tariff on some products to 50%.

Dubai: One Indian crew member was killed and six other Indians were injured in an Iranian cruise missile attack on two UAE oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the attack took place on two UAE-flagged oil tankers sailing along the southern shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani waters.

The two tankers have been identified as Mombasa and Al Bahiyah. The Indian crew member who died was working on the Mombasa tanker.

A total of eight people were injured in the attack. The injured include six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian citizens.

Officials said four of the injured are in critical condition. The missile strike caused a major fire on both tankers.

The fire has now been brought under control. The attack also caused heavy damage to both vessels.

The UAE strongly condemned the missile strike. It described the attack as a clear violation of international law and an act of piracy.

The UAE said such attacks threaten global energy security and regional stability. It urged Iran to stop such unprovoked attacks immediately.

The UAE also said it has the full right to protect its national security and respond to the attack.

Washington: An Indian-origin technology professional was allegedly shot dead by her husband following a domestic dispute in the US state of Georgia.

The victim has been identified as Sheetal Vrzesian. According to police, her husband, 56-year-old Kirk B. Vrzesian, shot and killed her at their home.

He also allegedly shot their 23-year-old son during the incident. The injured young man managed to run to the Laurel Creek Trail neighbourhood in Georgia and asked nearby residents for help.

Police arrested Kirk B. Vrzesian after the shooting. He has been charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The accused is being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Sheetal Vrzesian was a former student of the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech. She worked as an engineering leader at Google.

She had more than 20 years of experience in technology roles at both large and small companies. Sheetal spent her childhood in England, India, and Ghana.

She later moved to the United States to study Computer Science at Georgia Tech. She was named as an inventor on two software patents. She also served on the Georgia Tech College of Computing Advisory Board.

In addition, she was a member of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association Board of Trustees. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
