Cricket Stays With You: Rishi Dhawan Juggles Fatherhood and the Legend 90 League

Published

Former Indian all-rounder Rishi Dhawan has quickly made his mark with the Chhattisgarh Warriors in the ongoing Legend 90 League. Recently retired from domestic limited-overs cricket, this tournament marks Rishi Dhawan’s debut among retired cricketers, and he has swiftly demonstrated that he still has much to contribute.

Dhawan’s journey to the Legend 90 League is noteworthy on multiple fronts. Just a few weeks before taking the field, he and his wife, Deepali, welcomed their baby daughter. Now, as he embarks on this new chapter of his career, Dhawan has already produced match-winning performances for the Warriors.

In his opening match, Dhawan batted first and scored an impressive 50 runs off just 24 balls against the Dubai Giants. He followed this with a stellar bowling performance, claiming three wickets to secure a commanding 63-run victory for his team.

Not stopping there, in his next match against Big Boys Unikari, Dhawan was part of a record-setting display. The Warriors posted a remarkable 240 runs without losing a wicket, featuring Martin Guptill’s astonishing 160 not out off just 49 balls. Dhawan played a vital role at the other end, scoring an unbeaten 76 runs off 42 deliveries and forming a historic partnership, leading the Warriors to an impressive 89-run win.

Reflecting on his debut, Rishi Dhawan shared his enthusiasm for participating in the Legend 90 League: “It felt incredible to play in this league for the first time. Making my debut and contributing to the team’s success was truly special. The atmosphere, the pitch, and the facilities are outstanding, and I’m thrilled that I could aid the team in securing the victory.”

Despite his retirement from domestic white-ball cricket, Dhawan highlighted how events like these help former players maintain their connection with the game. “It’s fantastic to keep playing cricket post-retirement. It helps me stay fit and connected to the sport. Cricket remains a part of you, no matter how much time passes. Playing occasionally like this is a great way to stay involved,” he noted.

He also spoke about the intriguing format of the Legend 90 League: “The format is quite unique and different. It challenges you to stay mentally sharp due to the added batting Power-play and bowling restrictions. The game unfolds rapidly, making it difficult to gauge a winning total over 90 balls. However, as we play more, I’m sure we’ll acclimate to it,” Rishi added.

The all-rounder acknowledged the support from the home crowd, particularly as the Chhattisgarh Warriors represent the local area: “The fan support has been phenomenal. It’s wonderful to see people coming out and cheering for us. As the home team, we’re receiving tremendous local backing, enhancing the overall experience.”
