Couple Dies by Suicide after Family Dispute; Two-Year-Old Child Survives

Mandya: A tragic incident occurred in Mandya district where a couple died by suicide after allegedly attempting to kill their two-year-old child. The incident took place in K. R. Pete town.

The deceased have been identified as Darshan and Divyashree, residents of Hosakote village. The couple had been married for three years and had a two-year-old child.

According to reports, the couple was living in a rented house in the Jayanagar area of K.R. Pete. On Sunday morning (March 9), a family dispute reportedly took place between them.

During the incident, the couple allegedly tried to strangle their two-year-old child. The child became unconscious due to the attack.

After this, the couple died by suicide by hanging inside their house.

Fortunately, the child survived the incident and is currently receiving treatment after being found in an unconscious condition.

The exact reason for the suicide is not yet known. Police have registered a case and started an investigation.

The incident has been reported under the jurisdiction of the K. R. Pete Town Police Station.

Sri Lakshmanananda Multipurpose Cooperative Society Opens 7th Branch in Moodbidri

Moodbidri: The Sri Lakshmanananda Multipurpose Cooperative Society has opened its seventh branch in Moodbidri. The new branch is located at Prabhu Complex on Government Hospital Road.

The branch was inaugurated on Sunday by prominent guests, including Alva’s Education Foundation President Dr. M. Mohan Alva, MLA Umanath Kotyan, former minister K. Abhayachandra Jain, Moodbidri Ramakshatriya Sangha President Premananda K.S. and society president J. Krishna Palemar. They jointly lit the traditional lamp to mark the opening.

Speaking at the event, Dr. M. Mohan Alva said it was a happy occasion for the society to open a branch in Moodbidri. He said Moodbidri welcomes people from different backgrounds and wished the new branch success.

Former minister K. Abhayachandra Jain said several cooperative societies are already functioning in Moodbidri. He welcomed the opening of the new branch and hoped it would benefit the people of the town.

Society president J. Krishna Palemar said the Ramakshatriya community is a small community. However, the cooperative society run by the community has crossed a business volume of Rs. 500 crore.

He said the Moodbidri branch was the society’s seventh branch. He appealed to the people to support its growth. He also said the society plans to open branches across the coastal region.

MLA Umanath Kotyan also extended his best wishes to the new branch.

Bahahubali Prasad, Sripathi Bhat, society vice-president K. Dinesh Rao, Chief Executive Officer Chandan Kotekar and Moodbidri branch officer Chandrika were among those present.

The Sri Lakshmanananda Multipurpose Cooperative Society was established on December 7, 1997. It began with a share capital of Rs. 3 lakh, nine directors and 800 shareholders. The society now has a capital of around Rs. 2.8 crore and more than 7,500 members.

The society recorded a business turnover of over Rs. 450 crore in the last financial year.

As part of the Moodbidri branch opening offer, the society has announced an interest rate of 9.5% on fixed deposits for senior citizens and 9% for general customers.

Puttur: A 20-year-old B.Com student died after he reportedly became breathless while working out at a gym in Puttur on September 5.

The deceased has been identified as Shramik, son of Ramesh Rai, a resident of Kunjurpanja in Aryapu village.

Shramik was a final-year B.Com student at a private college in Neharunagar, Puttur.

According to reports, he was exercising at a gym in Bolwar when he suddenly felt breathless and became unwell.

He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Bolwar for treatment.

However, he died before reaching the hospital. Doctors examined him and confirmed his death.

A heart attack is suspected to be the cause of the death. Further details are awaited.

Bittu Tabahi’s River Cleanup Wins Praise from The Ocean Cleanup Founder

Bhopal: A 21-year-old youth from Madhya Pradesh has gained international attention for his efforts to clean a polluted river.

Surendra Singh Chaudhary, popularly known online as Bittu Tabahi, began cleaning the Ajnar River in Rajgarh district on January 26, 2026.

The river was filled with plastic waste, algae, sludge and other garbage. Bittu started the cleanup with a few friends but later continued the work largely on his own.

He spent his own savings on cleaning materials and manually removed tonnes of waste. Despite facing health problems and encounters with snakes, he continued his efforts.

Videos of his work went viral on social media. The initiative caught the attention of Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of Dutch environmental organisation The Ocean Cleanup.

After seeing a post about Bittu’s work on X, Slat invited him to join the organisation, writing, “Come work for us.”

Bittu, a second-year student from Biaora, has also received praise from Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The Chief Minister recently met him at the CM House and assured him of government support.

Bittu’s journey has now become an inspiring example of how one person’s initiative can create a wider impact.
