Congress to Reintroduce Defeated Candidates in 2028 Karnataka Assembly Elections

Published

on

The Congress party has initiated preparations for the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections, with a preliminary decision to re-nominate assembly candidates who previously lost, based on favorable survey results regarding their chances.
On Monday, DK Shivakumar, KPCC President and Deputy Chief Minister, convened a meeting with all the candidates who were defeated in the last assembly elections, encouraging them to get ready for the upcoming elections in 2028. According to Shivakumar, internal surveys suggest that up to 60 of the candidates who lost could potentially win in the next election.

“Our internal assessment indicates that 60 candidates who faced defeat in the last assembly elections are poised for potential victory in the next one. In light of this, we’ve urged our losing candidates to prepare for the 2028 elections,” Shivakumar informed journalists after the meeting concluded on Monday evening.

“We brought together 86 candidates who lost in the previous election to discuss their concerns and strategize for both the local body elections and the 2028 elections. We’ve provided clear instructions for these candidates to take proactive steps. Additionally, we’re working on an action plan in conjunction with the AICC to strengthen our presence in the remaining 20 constituencies,” Shivakumar elaborated.
Just hours later, before heading to Delhi for a meeting with the central water resources ministry, Shivakumar reiterated to the media the Congress Party’s commitment to a revitalization effort. He affirmed that leadership roles would be allocated to those who demonstrate grassroots dedication rather than those who simply network with leaders in Bengaluru. A final list of such dedicated workers and leaders is being compiled, and once completed, the state unit will seek approval from the national leadership.
Regarding election strategies, Shivakumar added that there would be another round of discussions with candidates who previously lost in both assembly and Lok Sabha elections to formulate a detailed plan aimed at winning their seats. The party has also been instructed to provide support and empower these candidates. “The Chief Minister and I plan to hold a meeting with the defeated candidates during our next session,” he mentioned.
“From March 23 to April 1, the Chief Minister and I, along with district in-charge ministers, will convene meetings with party workers. If time allows, district in-charge ministers can start these meetings sooner. I intend to meet with party workers in 2-3 assembly constituencies each day to ensure all 28 constituencies are covered,” he stated.
Shivakumar emphasized the importance of party organization, pledging to fill all vacant positions promptly, and revealed plans to establish party offices in each constituency.
He encouraged party leaders to acquire land to donate for party offices, sharing his example of purchasing land in Ramanagara. “I’ve purchased and donated land in Ramanagara for party use. Our goal is to establish a party office in each assembly constituency,” he said.
When asked about his leadership role in the party and his involvement in the 2028 elections, Shivakumar responded, “My duty is to advance the party, irrespective of my position at that time.” He emphasized that effective leadership is what drives the party forward, rather than mere titles.
He made it clear that the Congress would reward diligent workers at the grassroots level, rather than those who rely on connections in Bengaluru. “We require individuals who are active at the taluk level; we don’t need people who circle around senior leaders.” He affirmed that positions of power should yield tangible results, and priority would be given to leaders who can deliver outcomes.
The ongoing process of identifying such dedicated workers is in progress, and once finalized, the party unit in Karnataka will seek national leadership endorsement. Shivakumar noted that the AICC has directed the focus to be on those active in the field, with a finalized list of candidates for the party restructuring expected soon.
