Congress’ KC Venugopal Slams New CEC Appointment, Claims “Regime is Undermining Electoral Integrity”
Venugopal further criticized the rapid scheduling of the meeting and the subsequent appointment, suggesting it was an attempt to bypass Supreme Court oversight before a definitive ruling could take effect.
“Such alarming actions only confirm the widespread concerns regarding how the ruling regime is eroding the electoral process and manipulating regulations to serve its interests. From fraudulent voter lists and election schedules designed to benefit the BJP, to worries about EVM tampering—the government and the CECs it appoints are under significant scrutiny due to these issues,” he added.
He pointed out that, as indicated by the Leader of Opposition (LoP), this decision should have been postponed until the Supreme Court addressed the matter in accordance with the Constitution.
Venugopal’s remarks followed the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the new Chief Election Commissioner. A notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice stated that President Droupadi Murmu has approved Gyanesh Kumar’s appointment as Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India, effective February 19, 2025.
This appointment was made under the authority granted by section 4 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023.
Additionally, the Ministry of Law and Justice announced the appointment of Dr. Vivek Joshi as Election Commissioner, effective upon his assumption of office. Joshi is a 1989 batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre.
Notably, this appointment occurred just hours after the Selection Committee convened. Gyanesh Kumar is set to succeed Rajiv Kumar, who will conclude his term as Chief Election Commissioner on February 18.
