Chinese Film ‘Ne Zha 2’ Surpasses $2 Billion Worldwide, Breaking Records as the Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time

Published

The Chinese animated film ‘Ne Zha 2’ has been shattering records across the board. Following its triumphant surpassing of ‘Inside Out 2,’ it has claimed the title of the highest-grossing animated film of all time. In just 33 days, the film has amassed over $2 billion globally, making it the first animated feature to achieve such a milestone. Additionally, it ranks among the top-grossing films in cinematic history. Created with a budget of $80 million, ‘Ne Zha 2’ has already proven to be a blockbuster success.

This film is the sequel to the 2019 hit and draws inspiration from the 16th-century Chinese novel ‘The Investiture of the Gods.’ It follows a young hero endowed with magical powers as he defends the fortress town of Chentangguan. The film is directed by Yang Yu, also known as Jiaozi.

Out of its record-breaking gross, more than $1.96 billion comes from domestic sales in China alone, establishing it as the highest-grossing film ever in a single market. The film has also outperformed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which previously held a domestic record of $936 million. Remarkably, ‘Ne Zha 2’ is on track to surpass it globally, and it may soon overtake ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ entering the top five highest-grossing films of all time.

Currently, only six films have crossed the $2 billion mark. Should ‘Ne Zha 2’ surpass both ‘Infinity War’ and ‘The Force Awakens,’ it will trail just behind ‘Titanic’ ($2.2 billion). Following closely are the other highest-grossing titles: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ ($2.3 billion), ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ($2.7 billion), and ‘Avatar’ ($2.9 billion).

Prior to this achievement, ‘Ne Zha 2’ had already surpassed ‘Inside Out 2’ to secure its status as the highest-grossing animated film ever. It also became the fastest animated film to reach such heights, achieving this remarkable total in under three weeks. In addition to its record-breaking success, the film has also made history in the IMAX format.
