Chhattisgarh Makes Significant Strides Toward Becoming the Nation’s Textile Hub Through CMAI Collaboration

Published

on

Chhattisgarh has embarked on an ambitious mission to become India’s leading textile and apparel manufacturing hub, following the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) at the FAB Show 2025 in Mumbai today.

This agreement, witnessed by prominent industry leaders and policymakers, lays the groundwork for the development of an advanced Textile and Apparel Facilitation Centre in Raipur, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s industrial growth trajectory.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who headed the high-level delegation, passionately encouraged textile entrepreneurs by highlighting Chhattisgarh’s unique benefits as an investment destination. “This partnership with CMAI will be groundbreaking for our state’s economy,” CM Sai asserted, underscoring the initiative’s potential to create a comprehensive ecosystem throughout the entire textile value chain.

In conjunction with this announcement, the central government recently approved the establishment of a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campus in Nava Raipur, backed by an investment of ₹271 crore. This institute will serve as a center for design innovation and technical excellence in textiles.

CM Sai also emphasized Chhattisgarh’s rich textile heritage, particularly the esteemed kosa silk from Bastar and Surguja, which offers substantial opportunities for global marketing. “With the backing of institutions like NIFT and CMAI, we are well-positioned to promote our traditional textiles on the international stage while enhancing modern manufacturing capabilities,” he explained. The state’s approach focuses on both preserving traditional craftsmanship and leveraging technological advancements.

Chhattisgarh’s updated industrial policy presents unprecedented incentives, distinguishing it from other states. CM Sai elaborated on how the government has enacted over 350 reforms to prioritize what he calls the “speed of doing business” over merely facilitating ease. The policy includes pioneering provisions such as a 252% capital reimbursement for investments exceeding ₹100 crore that create employment opportunities for 1,000 local residents, a first for India’s textile sector. Additionally, special packages for enterprises in tribal regions and customized support for MSMEs reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive industrial growth.

Chhattisgarh’s strategic advantages make it appealing to textile investors. The state boasts ample water resources, a reliable power supply, and a central geographical location that enhances logistical benefits. Major infrastructure projects, including the ₹48,000 crore railway modernization initiative and the forthcoming Raipur-Visakhapatnam Expressway, are set to bolster connectivity to both domestic and international markets. Enhanced cargo facilities at Raipur Airport further strengthen the state’s transportation capabilities.

Human resource development is another vital element of Chhattisgarh’s textile strategy. The presence of esteemed institutions like IIT, IIM, and the soon-to-be-established NIFT, along with upgraded ITIs offering specialized textile programs, ensures a steady supply of skilled professionals. During his visit to the Chhattisgarh pavilion at the FAB Show, CM Sai explored how traditional crafts could be integrated into modern manufacturing processes, reflecting the government’s vision of crafting a distinctive textile ecosystem that harmonizes heritage with modernity.

The high-level delegation, which included Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain, Principal Secretary Subodh Singh, and other senior officials, underscores the administration’s commitment to transforming this sector. As Chhattisgarh positions itself as a leader in India’s textile revolution, it prepares for significant investments that promise to create thousands of jobs and elevate the state’s profile on the global textile stage. With its innovative policies, infrastructural benefits, and rich textile heritage, Chhattisgarh is crafting a new narrative in industrial development that could serve as a model for others to follow.
