Chennithala Criticizes CPM’s Resolution Declaring Modi Government as ‘Non-Fascist’

Published

on

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala voiced strong opposition on Monday to the CPI-M’s draft resolution for its 24th Party Congress, which claims that neither the BJP nor the RSS can be categorized as fascist. Speaking to reporters in Kozhikode, Chennithala expressed disbelief at the CPI-M’s political stance, particularly its assertion that the Modi administration does not qualify as a fascist regime. “It is shocking to suggest that the BJP and RSS are not fascist,” he stated. He further alleged that this new resolution is a strategic maneuver by the CPI-M to attract BJP votes in the forthcoming legislative assembly elections. “During the last assembly elections, CPI-M managed to sustain its power in Kerala by securing votes from the BJP. Now, with little political foothold elsewhere in India, the party is attempting to guarantee BJP support for the next election through this resolution,” Chennithala claimed.

“Prior to the last assembly elections, Prakash Karat expressed similar sentiments, while Sitaram Yechury has consistently opposed it. Karat’s perspective indicates a possible understanding between the CPI-M and BJP. At this rate, will the CPI-M soon declare the RSS a progressive movement? It’s worth noting that the Kerala Chief Minister has never criticized the BJP or Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.

In a related comment, Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan remarked that the CPI-M’s resolution should not be unexpected, considering the Left party’s purported long-standing covert relationship with the BJP. “The CPI-M has now concluded that the Modi government is neither classically fascist nor neo-fascist. If this continues, they may soon assert that the BJP is a democratic entity,” he commented.

“The CPI-M in Kerala has consistently found a way to coexist with fascism and the Sangh Parivar. Now, to maintain their governance, they have introduced a new document claiming that the Modi government is not fascist. This reflects the CPI-M’s strategy to align with Modi, make peace with the Sangh Parivar, and ultimately capitulate to them,” Satheesan charged.

The CPI-M’s draft resolution claims that the Modi government cannot be classified as a fascist regime. The assessment document circulated to state units elaborates that while there are “neo-fascist tendencies,” the Modi government does not fit the full definition of fascism. “We have articulated that the current political framework under the BJP-RSS constitutes a Hindutva-corporate authoritarian regime exhibiting neo-fascist characteristics. We are not labeling the Modi government as fascist or neo-fascist nor characterizing the Indian state as such. However, after ten years of BJP rule, there has been a concentration of political power within the BJP-RSS, resulting in the emergence of neo-fascist traits,” the document states.

While the CPI describes the Modi government as fascist and CPI (ML) asserts that fascism has already taken root in India, the CPI-M has repudiated both assertions. The resolution clarifies that classical fascism, as demonstrated by Mussolini and Hitler, arose from inter-imperialist conflicts, whereas neo-fascism stems from the crises of neoliberalism.
