The incident comes at a time when the Supreme Court has directed authorities to isolate dogs showing rabies symptoms. The Tamil Nadu government has also launched a vaccination drive for stray dogs.

Once symptoms appear, survival is extremely rare. Rabies usually kills within 7 to 14 days after symptoms begin. However, experts say the disease is 100% preventable if the wound is washed immediately and the patient receives post-exposure vaccination.
Globally, about 59,000 people die of rabies every year, mostly in Asia and Africa.
